Merc 207D OM 602 campervan engine upgrade

Hi all.
Just joined the forum and looking for advice. I have a 1989 207D Autotrail Campervan with a 2.4 OM 602 engine fitted as standard. On the flat, I have no problems whatsover once she's wound up.
However, on the steep hills I travel up around the Highlands, the speed can drop off as low as 14mph ...
I'm looking to upgrade the 2.4 up to nearer the 3 litre mark using a model that has no electronics to speak of and the resultant headaches that come with it.
I would appreciate any advice regarding the upgrade and any necessary modifications required to complete it.
I'm a former truck mechanic, so will be doing the work myself...

You could use a 300d from a 1986 to 1992 model 124 Would go up a mountain. And easy to fit

My only underlying concern Brian, is that of length. The 207D is quite snub nosed. Would the OM617-5 do the same job as its a tad shorter I would surmise? I was going to keep the original manual box etc, as it's not speed I'm after, just a little more oomph for them hills.lol.

OM606 engine: 34" from rad fan to bellhousing x 27" from side of turbo to widest part of intake manifold.

OM603 engine: 31.5" x ?

Hello Bob I know it's been a long time, I am looking to do this conversion to my 207 and was wondering g if you have any pictures of the engine fitted
