I have a Nokia 3610i in a UHI console installed in a 270cdi coupe (2004) I've just bought the car, very fine, but the phone system is absurd!! The phone works fine when removed from the cradle, when inserted in the cradle a little car symbol appears in the 3610i's screen, and the phone charges, and the external antenna is connected, but the in dash display does not recognise the existence of the phone, saying "no remote" with the radio turned off, and "no phone" with it turned on. The instruction book mentions that muting should occur automatically, which it does not, neither does the radio prompt me for a pin code. needless to say, the steering wheel paddles do not function. The cradle is a "non curly lead" push in type, (Mercedes product) and the phone has the latest firmware, version 7, installed, but I do not know if it ever worked in the car. The handbook says a "muting line" is a necessary part of the installation ( the car does not have the full "comand" screen option, only the manually mutable radio) Can any expert out there assist before I take out a mortgage to have Mercedes investigate? Your assistance would be warmly welcomed

Do not be so dismissive of your MB agent unless you have prior 1st hand knowledge, you might find they point you in the right direction without charge if you take a less combative stance.
Further when you bought it did you not ask about the phone set up !

Mercedes dont make a cradle for Nokia 3610i so it may have the same connections as whatever phone your cradle is for but it doesnt mean it will work fine.

Thanks to everbody for the quick responses.

Malcolm: you are completely correct, the phone is indeed a 6310i. Any ideas?

As a start try a factory reset on the phone and unclip the cradle and clip it back in and make sure it is fully clipped in. Check none of the pins on the connector on the cradle are bent as they can get bent.

When I put my 6230i back in my car after a long absence it didn't seem to pick it up. After going out of my mind it was suggested that I check and clean both the connection points (handset and cradle). Hey presto, my phone works with my car again!

Use some rubbing alcohol

Thanks to all.

Sadly, after following each and every piece of advice, situation is exactly as before! The cradle appears to be new, no pins are bent or broken, all is now cleaned with carbon tet, and the dash still refuses to admit the existence of the phone, which continues to charge, and show the little car symbol, when it is inserted into the cradle.

Bafflingin the extreme, but thank you all anyway

Need to to find out if the problem is the phone itself, the cradle or your car. Try the cradle and phone in another car if you can.

I have 2 phones where a faulty phone module knocked out the phones when in the cradle, they work fine as hand held but no longer in the car.

I will take them both to my phone man to see if he can re program them again, could be handy for members to loan or try in their cars

What a gentlemanly suggestion Sir! I would gladly avail myself of such an opportunity should you do so!. Meanwhile I should like to use my ( non existent) curly lead to strangle whoever thought up a system of such labrynthine complexity.

I will take them next Wed to the little shop in Exeter, they only charge £10 to update and or check.

Talking about the same systems, sometimes those with Comand or just the radio, the things may be dead and no sound from anything,,just by taking the phone out of the holder and putting it back can restore normal use,,mine has done it once a year in spite of the latest phone module

That is for the antenna connection to keep it clean when not used in the car

A friend had very similar problem to Hamshaw, same phone, it would charge and work ok as a handheld but in the cradle it would not commutate at all, it was only when we took this bung out of the back that the phone was recognised and worked as it should.

The removal of this bung did have some connection to the problem as the system did work when the bung was removed and the phone pressed firmly into the cradle…just a long shot Malcolm.

There certainly could be a grounding problem if the screen of the antenna was not connected, thats for sure ;)

Many thanks to all, but to no avail, even authorised Merc dealers appears to be defensive on repairing the phone systems, we shall see.

Thanks again
