Wonder if anyone could help me,
My front brake discs and pads are due very soon to be changed.
I’ve read in places you have to disable the SBC system? And then some places say you don’t? Just a little confused! I’ve never actually done brakes before so this is the first time! Instructions look fairly straightforward it’s just that SBC controller!
Otherwise I’ll put it into a garage which quoted me £350 which I thought was a little expensive!

That’s about right for front discs and pads at a garage. I’ve paid around that on two different E Klassen.

For SBC, it depends whether or not your car has it. What year is it?

2005 per his profile I'd guess....

So here's the deal with SBC.
Whenever you open a door, unlock the car or touch the brakes the SBC pump will run (thats the odd noise you get when the car is unlocked etc). If you have the wheel off and no pads in there and a finger in the way when the SBC pump runs it will crush whatever is in there (and that could be very painful).
The only safe way to work on these is to disable SBC.
Normally this is done via diagnostics (STAR or other suitable software) but you can also just disconnect the batteries, pull fuses, pull off pump connectors etc but this is not recommended. I've heard of folks leaving everything connected and then just not opening any doors, activating locks etc but in my mind thats a bit like seeing if a gun is loaded by pulling the trigger.
Safest option (if you don't have the diagnostics to disable it properly) is to have an indy do it. If you do do it yourself don't forget to re-enable everything before test driving!

I did my Clk front brakes and pads last year I think for about £140-150 , using MB parts , I think I remember seeing my E class cost would have been the same as well .
Try MB Grangemouth for a good price on parts (mention the forum for a discount ) .
Biggest problem I had being a newbie was getting the hub clean of all the rust that had built up , in the end I used a wire cleaning thingy an an angle grinder which did the job in minuites leaving a spotless shiny Surface .

wow ! 350 quid just for front discs and pads , someones making plenty
This was quick fit! I was going to say I’ve paid a lot less than that for discs and pads I know it’s a Mercedes but it’s still discs and pads at the end of the day!
I thought it was because of the SBC unit!

just for info, the front pads alone for my car were £80 from MB .... surprisingly, the (smaller) rears were somewhat more expensive. And having been down the route of 'cheap' aftermarket discs in the past on another large car, it ended up costing me a lot more.

It’s one thing I would never buy cheap is brakes! I was debating a set of brembo brakes (not performance) just standard ones! I’ve driven cars with cheap discs and pads and they go spongy in a very short space of time at speed.

Whatever brakes you end up with get a quote from MB Grangemouth first (mention the forum discount )

Sounds great but I’m miles away from that dealer! :( I’m based in and around Northampton!

Grangemouth do great prices on parts and will deliver for £5
Hmmm, I’ll give them a call! Maybe worth just getting the parts and finding a local too fit them!

I dont know if you have a local AC branch but MB Grangemouth are part of the Arnold Clark franchise and will deliver your parts to a local dealership FOC and can be picked up.

I was around £180 for front discs + pads for my CLS from MB Grangemouth.

No big dramas to fit them but the pad pins were a PITA to remove and i ended up destroying them so it may be worth getting a set of pins at the same time to save another trip to the dealers or ECP.

I went to ECP in the end and got discs and pads (for the 215) for half what MB Grangemouth were quoting.
