76000km is 47000miles . Which might explain that first big jump in mileage .

Makes sense. And if true makes the car a whole lot more desirable and authentic.

Worth re-examining the original Mot Cert for April 2015.

When I buy cars I tend to go for the ones with high miles and no history as such, and even better, no load of bull spiel usually attached with the ad.
These cars don't tend to sell quickly hence me coming along with little money in my pocket and making stupidly low offers. It doesn't take much to track a cars history and makes it fun playing detective. A few hours spent......(Well sometimes more time really) and you can double your money when reselling the car as you now have the history :D plus there is always someone out there who knows higher mile cars have been very reliable.
As usual this is my own opinion and should be taken with a pinch of salt ;)

I reckon it's been incorrectly enter and its 56,000 in 2015.

Easy done but not corrected by owner or MOT Garage.

The original cert will be electronic by that date.....................

Could be a typo, but why wouldn't you correct it as the owner?? The dealers advert is also truely awful. Why do they think ads like this will sell?? SL's are such complex beasts, would anyone buy one as blind as you would be with that advert?
It does look like a typo to me, however I would also want to know about the continuity of ownership too before reaching any conclusions. :)

Well I happened to go past the forecourt in question today, it's one guy selling cars on the forecourt of a general service centre, so I stopped and had a quick look. The seller wasn't there and his mobile went to voice mail so no answer on the mileage anomaly but I had a quick look round it. I don't know if he'd driven it but the engine temp showed 80 degrees as soon as I turned the key which the lady in the service centre had kindly got for me.

I had a look in the boot and no smell or feel of any damp so presumably the roof seals are intact given how much rain we had yesterday. The car looked pretty tidy but the big worry was rust in the rear wheel arches, not horrendous as you couldn't see it until you bent down but both lips had rust coming through most of the way round. The problem being that what is showing on the outside may turn out to be worse than it looks although the metal itself seemed pretty solid.

Can these be stripped repaired and treated effectively to last in the long term or are new panels, which I should think on the rear are an horrendous job, the only answer?

A good repair on these rear wheel arches will last a good 3 years. They all rust and what ever you do to prevent it, it is only a 'slow the rust process down' job ;) that is like you say, fit new quarters which is rather a big job in itself, and to get all the welds sealed again is near impossible :(

Several years ago I looked at a SLK 170.
Immaculate, but very slight signs of rust on rear arch returns.
The salesman agreed that I could look underneath on his ramps.
He had not looked underneath before putting it up for sale, as it had just been px'd.

Underneath was a mass of rust. Even the cross beams were eaten away.
So if ever I were to see Mercedes wheel arches showing rust, I would walk away.
There are good ones out there still.

Personally I wouldn't be too concerned if its only surface rust on the return lip on the rear wheel arch. It can be treated permanently and Malcolm Television (mhrip) showed us how to do it. If as you say the metalwork is solid you can catch it now and get a permanent fix.
