ML 320 engine problems-help!

We have a 1999 ML 320 which lost power and seemed to be running on only half the cylinders. Left for half hour waiting for RAC who didnt turn up, so tried starting the car again, it fired up but only on half cylinders as before. Whatever the fault is its cleared itself but we now cant trust the car.
Any suggestions would be very welcome

Thats gonna be a airmass sensor or a set of leads going down, at a guess,

Is your engine running very rough like it's running on 4 or 5 cylinders and putting? or running smooth but lacks power? if its former, it coud be one of the coil has gone, in this engines, one coil feeds two cylinders, if its the latter, could be air mas sensor, to be sure, best get a star on it.
