You've also got to remember that you're only going as far as the 2 wheel drive car blocking the road in front of you ;-)

Usually wagons up here, no chance of pushing them to the side.
We've plenty of hills so a first wagon slows to a halt with no traction to pull the load, then a second goes to overtake and that's the road totally closed.

2 girlies driving up the Cat & Fiddle from Macclesfield, me descending flashed them.
"The roads blocked you won't get through"
"oh we've got winter tyres on we'll be ok"
"well if those tyres can climb over the two wagons at the top corner you might be right, it's up to you."

A tail back increase rapidly, I've learnt to stay away from them as when the following car comes up to my rear bumper then I'm there for the duration.

Exactly.

Which brings me nicely onto kit.....
Things to carry when travelling in snowy conditions:
Small trenching spade - but be very careful if you have a heart condition as it can be extremely hard work.
An old piece of carpet about 6 foot long (to lie on when digging snow out from under the vehicle)
Decent torch with spare batteries (Carl you should be ok here).
Warm blanket or sleeping bag
Warm waterproof jacket
Stout waterproof footwear - you may need to walk to safety and it could be some distance.
Tow rope (notwithstanding comment earlier).
Snack food of some kind for energy

Optional items
Bag of grit
Change of clothes

Or if you stop and they can't
