Moise when turning wheel

When I turn the wheel of my 1988 200T there is a groaning noise, particularly first thing in the morning.
It is much less apparent at higher speeds, and also not as apparent if I rev the engine slightly.
The power steering still works, bbut the more you turn the wheel the louder the noise gets. Any ideas on the cause, and if so, how easy to fix

First things to check are PS fluid level and condition; belt tension and condition.
