I own a 1988 300gd g wagon and love it it's a great car and I use it everyday but I'm now looking for the best engine to replace my slow 300gd with I want somthing that won't be crazy hard to fit or somthing that's notgoing to only make a small difference. I was thinking of a ml270 engine but I can't find of anyone has put one of these in befor and how hard it will be. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I'd have thought the OM606 would be the natural replacement

Read the latest edition of MB enthusiast? A friend of mine in Devon converts G-wagens to 220/270/320 cdi's with either auto or manual gearboxes, one was featured this month. Cdi conversions are certainly not diy but having had a go in his, a g320cdi manual is THE way to go!

That's an OM617, so a turbo conversion from the markets where it was available would be possible.
An NA OM606 engine would also give a good hike.

I'd have thought the turbo OM606 (OM606.96x) would be the one to fit?

I would fit an NA OM606 and then fit a stock turbo/ manifold assembly off an OM606.960. That way you'll get the best of both worlds. A grunty 200hp for sure. Contrary to popular belief the NA OM60X engines will happily handle a mild- moderate turbo fitment up to around 50hp per cylinder. There's an unused M12 threaded outlet off of the oil filter housing for supplying the turbo with oil. Not sure on the specifics with regards the turbo drain but I'm sure an ally welder fabricator could adapt the stock NA sump for a turbo oil return.

could I get your friends details, I have bought a classic and need to put in a new engine, maybe unleaded rather than diesel if that's possible?

They will accept it but the n/a blocks do not have the oil cooling jets squirting oil at the pistons and there are quite a few other differences such as the n/a injection pump is only good for around 150hp max (134 stock) so will not even properly run a stock turbo 606.
