How often is the car driven, have you ever tried charging the rear battery.

From what you've said, your battery would appear to be holding almost no charge.,especially if it says "battery protection" on the dash and won't turn over, or is very lethargic when doing so.

The boot battery is used in powering the starter motor and glow plugs.

So is it lethargic in turning over or does it turn over reasonably quickly but need a jump start to get it going?

The hard problem here is you do not know the condition of the battery, many selling cars will put a dud battery on, if you change it and still have problems, then a drain somewhere.

Its impossible to do much in the way of a test if they are flat, the rear one is the main one.

Nope, alternators are not made to charge flat batteries, it can take up to 20 hours with a good 6 amp charger, to get the battery fully charged, that is equal to 500 miles of non stop driving.

You are not charging Sir, the reg pack could have failed on the alternator, the voltage across the battery with the engine running should be 13.8 volt, and this will be your problem. A simple check with a voltmeter over the battery would confirm that.

Would it be the regulator or would it be the alternator it self? Would this fix be costly any rough prices?
