Could be the noise of the pawl locking when going into (or coming out of) Park. Normal, and nothing to worry about.

OTOH, it could just be taking up the slack in the driveshafts or 4WD unit, and may point to normal wear at that particular mileage. After all, there's loads of moving greasy bits in the ML, some kind of backlash should be expected, probably even when new.

Now that you've heard the noise, it's worth trying another one of similar age/mileage (plenty on Ebay - you don't have to actually BUY them) to see if the noise you're hearing is reasonable.

Without hearing what your complaint is, its difficult to say, but, these cars have an electronic shift via the intelligent servo motor. It could be you are hearing a completely normal operation. On my ML I hear the gearshift move, I wouldnt say it clicks, but I hear the motor release and move, even more when the door is open and the radio is off.

Your local MB specialist should say whether the action is normal or not. They all make the same noise.

Mine ‘clicks’ as I engage Drive or reverse and also when I put it in P- every one I’ve had/been in also does similar, as Steve says it’s difficult to picture a noise as it were ...
Maybe you should see how you can try it in a few other Mercs (maybe go to a dealership and see if they’ll let you start up and change between gears?)
