Hi there everyone!

I'm a new member on the site although I have browsed it in the past and found it to be a great resource - it's great to see so much MB experience being shared.

I'm posting now to find out whether anyone has any recommendations for a specialist to service my 1989 300SL.

I bought the car about six months ago with 35k on the clock. It was most recently serviced in May 2007 for the previous owner by Jacksons in Poole but the service history is a little patchy and I bought with full knowledge of that (and, of course, a commensurate reduction in price).

As the MOT's coming up, I thought I'd roll it in with a service and take the opportunity to get a few niggles sorted and find someone who can look at the car with a knowledgeable eye and perhaps spot any impending problems. So I'm looking for a specialist in or near London with good 107 experience who can give me more specific model knowledge at a lower price than an MB main dealer.

When I bought the car, I had thought that George Fraser would be a good choice, but having read this recent thread (http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=34529), I'm not so sure. Another possibility I got from the list of independent workshops thread was Colin Ferns. Or Steve Redfearn Motor Co Ltd?

Has anyone got any comments on specialists with experience of the 107 SL?

Thanks very much!

Thanks for the replies. I gathered Mercs only were a bit of a hot topic around here...

I'm in EC1 (pretty central) but prepared to travel a certain distance (i.e. as far as I can drive in the morning and get back from by train in time for work) for someone with good experience of these older cars.

At the moment, I'm veering towards Steve Redfearn in Wimbledon.

Have you had any luck in locating a decent mechanic? Did you try Steve Redfearn? (I'm also located in EC1 but prepared to travel )

Not sure if Kingston way is too far but Tony at TM Motors always has a least one 107 in his garage whenever I've been down there. He is considered a bit of a master on the older cars and often solves problems for the main dealers( shhhh!)

When I lived in Crouch End I used Automerc in Hornsey. I liked their approach - Ivan is super-methodical but he also realises that money doesn't grow on trees

Unlike a lot of Mercedes specialists they work regularly on older Mercedes (1950s, 60s, etc) and, what's more, they like & appreciate them

Huge thread resurrection here!

I did indeed try Steve Redfearn and, 10 years later, am still taking my 300SL down there for its annual service and MOT. I have found them to be fantastic over the years, taking great care of the car. Steve and his team know the 107 incredibly well and are able to take a realistic view of what work needs to be done and what can be deferred. Can't recommend them enough.

Unfortunately, the car is (as of last month) living in Lancashire - not far from Clitheroe - so I need to find another garage as good as Steve's! Any recommendations?

Thanks, John - very helpful. JBM are not too far at all and I will certainly bear them in mind.

I've also seen some reference to Nick Webster in Poynton. That's on the outer edge of my ideal range but I am prepared to travel a bit to find the right place. Has anyone any experience of how they deal with cars of the 107's era, or any other suggestions of a garage which specialises in the older Mercedes-Benz? (Of course the 107 has no diagnostics etc and mine - which was towards the very end of the run - is now nearly 30 years old.)

Don’t know Nick Webster personally , looks like the right type of specialist- a bit further I guess and closer to me is one specialist for older classics- Autobarn

AutoBarn looks like a great option, from what I can find online, and one which my research so far hadn't turned up. Although it's slightly further by distance than Nick Webster, it is probably about the same driving time from where I am. Definitely on the list. Thanks again!
