Through towns I’ve reckoned I’ve worked out about 11mpg there abouts. When Goodwood revival is on I was thinking about taking the SL down
Ouch what model/engine, do you have the V12?

It’s a 1992 500SL with the 4 speed auto, this was when it was very hot and the traffic was awful, or potentially my maths is slightly out! I’d love the V12 SL they just held their value so well!

R129 then, 25 years ago that was pretty standard consumption, my brother had an XJS convertible similar figures, had he kept it probably worth a fortune now!

Hmmmm, interesting I may have to look into a petrol version when it comes to upgrading...

It’s not all sweetness and light though

My late and great uncle had an XJS V12 - he only died recently so fairly relevant - I think he got low teens on a run

Basically with the new MOT laws it’s unlikely to impact older cars much - unless it encourages people to keep them in better condition

My grandfather had 3 XJS’s, beautiful cars the 1st didn’t last too long....
first 2 were V12’s and the last one was the very last edition one, pretty much identical to the one jeremy Clarkson used in the India special

That is what he had, in black and convertible, had a lovely sound but as his daily runner in his 20s he couldn't afford to keep it....

They’re incredibly cool, but poorly built and fragile in so many ways

As a spotty 20 year old I had the pleasure of driving my mate's Dad's XJS V12 once. I remember being totally blown away at how quiet, fast and smooth it was.

I think it was jools Holland who said you could put a bottle cap on top of the engine and rev it slightly and the bottle cap wouldn’t move a millimetre because of how smooth it actually was it was a great V12 engine smooth and plenty of toque

I find them nowadays to have a really small low down cabin. Really cool.

Smelt like an antique wardrobe, and in terms of the I saw a few similarities with the 250 GT PF I was taken out in 7 years ago. That was a lovely v12!

It seems to me that the British had it sorted with smooth running big engines like The Rolls Royce 6 3/4 V8 and the Jaguar 5.3 V12.
I believe the R129 V8 was an American engine from Cadillac? Or Chrysler I can’t remeber which

For what it's worth, my 03 220 CDI smokes like crazy if you floor the pedal at low speeds. It always passes the emissions test with no problem, and just did so again on Tuesday. The MOT man says a lot of it is soot left in the exhaust, because I generally drive like an old lady.

No - the M119 V8 in the original r129 was a development of the M117 V8 - also an MB design.
The subsequent M113 V8 as used in most MB V8s from the mid 90s on is likewise an MB design

Oh! My bad! I don’t know where I got that from! I find it impressive they got over 300bhp from that engine in the early 90’s!
