hi i have just bought an 1994 e200 saloon and was wondering if anyone could could give me some advice on 2 points

1. when i am going along the road in a straight line there is some play when you turn the steering wheel slightly from side to side and the car can slightly move from side to side and you have to correct it all the time, someone has told me there is a grub screw on the steering rack that i can adjust, does anyone have any pics of the steering rack or can tell me how to adjust the grub screw if that in fact exists. Has anyone got a diagram of the steering rack that i can use to see how to adjust the screw

2 can anyone tell me if there is a sensor on the exhaust underneath to help with the emissions as i cant get it thru its mot as it failed on the emission test, i no there is one on the manifold but dont no about the exhaust system itself or any good bottle of anything that i could put in before it goes for the emmision test.

any advice and help would be grateful

The grub screw you are talkiing about is on the steering box. I believe your car has a box, not a rack and yes they can be adjusted to some extent to take up the slack, though I personally don't know the tightening procedure but if you d a search on steering box you should find what you're looking for.

I would have thought there would be an o2 sensor on a 1994 E200.

welcome. As Jberks on the steering, we covered this back in Nov/Dec 2005 quite a long debate, but all of the info is there, including measurements take at the wheel.

I will post back later on the emissions

The is an allen bolt on the steering box with a lock nut around it. Crack the locknut and UNDO the allen bolt slightly. This will take some of the lash out of the steering. Make sure the steering is straight ahead before making any adjustments, and only do a LITTLE bit at a time, say a quarter turn. If you go too far your steering can jam at full lock! It may well be worth fitting a new steering damper, not expensive.

for the emissions I'd give it a good old Italian tune up - thrash the testes off it on the way to the MOT place, cane it along the motorway in third gear, works wonders!
