Hi guys newbie here. Looking into purchasing a E320 Avantegarde 2004 Estate this week. Going to be viewing it middle of the week hopefully!

I'm after Some advice... myself and wife are wanting reliability. Are they reliable as long as they are looked after and maintained? The one I'm going to look at has full service history majority of it being main dealer and at 150,000 miles. It's in excellent condition with everything working as it should. ( so the owner says )

Is there anything I should be looking for so I don't by a lemon/money bin. I have looked at mot history which all adds up only advisory saying slight play in nearside track rod end.

Any advice will be much appreciated. Little excited and hoping this car will be great to own.

Thanks.
Grey

Hi and welcome , my only input would be that at that mileage I would want at least one previous auto gearbox oil and filter change to be documented , the current thinking now is that this should be every 40k miles .
If you post up the vehicle link/pics then there are some knowledgeable people on here who will give their opinions (probably not me :D )

Hello and welcome. I have an 07 reg, very similar to your proposal. Things to look out for:

SBC (Sensotronic Braking Control). This is fly by wire braking control unit; pre the 2006 facelift it had a fixed number of actuations before it would flash up a big warning message and stop working. Replacement cost around £1000 all in.

Rust around rear arches.

Injectors- check for a black tarry substance around the injectors. This is Black Death, fixable for around £400.

General squeaks and rattles- front dampers tend to go at around this mileage.

I think it's illegal to post a link lol. Which is understandable. I will try post pictures.

If you decide on it, make sure you turn up being driven by a friend, and with cash.
That makes haggling easier, and a good price reduction more likely.
Apologies if I'm teaching grandma to suck eggs here!

It's had five owners during its life, and was first registered in Sept 2003 on a private plate, before later reverting to the plate it now has. Mileage seems genuine.
Wonder how serious the ABS fault was at 146k miles? Could be nothing - such fault lights sometimes show up and then disappear later.

150k would worry me for what its worth...

Id look for lower miles seen as reliability is important to you... just thoughts..

I was going to take my code reader just incase it's hiding any codes. I did see that on the mot history. Will ask the owner about this also. Was curious to know if anyone has serviced there suspension air pump?
