Out of the blue, as ever, the dash lit up with ASR and then BAS (skid control/cruise control), neither of which now work- but which have been faultless and used almost every day. Does anyone know of a simple place to start my process of elimination?

Sounds like one of the sensor rings has rusted and come detached from a rear drive shaft. Very common on a W210. Afraid it's a new shaft if that's the case £600

The reluctor rings and inserting tools can be bought separately. Just not from mb!

As above, reluctor rings and brake light switches are common.
