Not sure what the info system is but once you've connected your phone to Comand via bluetooth it should stay connected whether you're displaying Navi, Media, Phone etc.

Sorry, yeah pardon my terminology.

So without having the command switched on, the phone via BT will not work right?

Cause mine doesn't till i switch on the command via the center console. As soon as i do, it connects

My previous car (Passat), connected as soon as the engine was switched. Whether the info system (media/nav etc) was switched on or not

thanks

I would have thought it would connect even if the head unit is switched off, being a new model though we may be better waiting for someone with one to comment on theirs but IMO it doesn’t sound right.

Of course it will only connect once COMAND is on. It’s a bit like saying am I going to see the tv program if the tv screen is not on.
If the blietooth was permanently on and connected it will only drain the battery.

Or do you rather mean if you run the car with COMAND off?

Infotainment /Comand needs to be switched on, it’s the central feature. Suspect that’s the same with all similar systems, it is with my XC90

so if you want command switched off how would you know who's calling you or how would you use the phone to make a call or read a sms msg?

I had a Skoda Octavia and even with the radio/screen turned off, the phone automatically remained connected and if I received a call, the screen came on (even when turned off) to show the caller. I agree with the OP, when I got my first MB, I was surprised it didn't do the same. All VAG's I've driven do it.

And while we're at it, why do I have to have the radio on when all I want is Nav? :)

My experience too. Always had a Passat. And once you start the engine, the phone connects

Oh yeah, forgot my A6 used to do that- caught me out a couple of times when I was minding my own business!

Have to admit I didn't notice this in the 212, I'll have to try it tomorrow morning

On my Comand I can switch off the display and still have the phone connected via bluetooth. It doesn't display incoming call details though.
Go to Vehicle, slide the control knob down, select Display Off
But different Comand versions may vary

Yes, that's what I do, mine has a button at the side of the COMAND control knob that switches the display off, but leaves COMAND running.

The difference being, if I have the radio on when I press the button, the sound still comes out of the speakers, it's just the display that goes blank. With VAG, when you turn it off, the whole system seems to shut down (i.e. the radio goes off), but in some sort of standby mode, leaving the bluetooth still working so receiving a call causes it to 'pop'.

I'd still take my MB over the Skoda/Passat (or the wife's UP!) any time!
