NTG4 v11 upgrade

Hi all, thanks in advance for any/all replies,
I have a NTG4 v11 sat nav and I'm looking to upgrade it, I know of a v18 but it can only update from version 12 (correct me if I'm wrong) What do I need to do the upgrade and where is the cheapest and best place to buy the upgrade disc?

First off what is the build date of your car/Comand system? If it's pre 11/08 you can only update to V12 2014-15 due to the size of the nav partition on the Comand HDD - this is the problem I have with my 7/08 NTG4, and fixing that is not cheap!

You have 2 choices with upgrade DVD's - new, or second user. New will set you back about £150, whereas second user DVD's (make sure they're genuine MB, not copies) a year or two old can often be had either from a forum member or from eBay for considerably less. Installing them is quite easy, but takes about 1 3/4 hours for DVD1 and a further 1/2 hour for DVD2, so I've found the best way is to connect a battery charger to the car battery and leave the ignition on (the position just before the starter motor kicks in) to avoid Comand shutting down during the installation. However, don't worry if it does, next time you fire up Comand it will resume the installation from where it left off.

You can certainly update from V11 to V12 - I've done that myself. If your car is post 11/08 I do not know whether you can go direct from V11 to V16/17/18, but hopefully Alfie or Richard from Comand.co.uk will see this thread and advise, they are forum sponsors and know more about MB ICE than MB themselves! You could drop them an email with the VIN of your car and you'll get chapter and verse of what you can do.

OK, so you have the larger HDD nav partition that will take tha later updates, I would do a search for update DVD's as the full price current disc is an eye watering price!

Also keep an eye on main dealer special offers as they occasionally offer an update for £99. For my money I'd look for 1 or 2 year old update DVD's on forums and eBay (search EU, not just UK) - but make sure you buy genuine MB DVD's as copies can brick your Comand - expensive mistake!!

Thanks for the info, seen a v15 for £24.99, that might be a cheaper alternative and its only a couple of years out of date.

Is that for a copied disc? Always a risk although I have done it.

First off, make sure you'r looking at not only genuine MB DVD's but also that they are NTG4-204 not NTG4-211, as e class NTG4-211 DVD's do not work in a 204!

Second off these are from Bulgaria and look genuine, stated as new, but I'd be surprised if they are. The only possibility is that they are from a set issued to an MB main daler to do updates on a number of customers cars, rather than a set of retail to customer DVD's. We occasionally see "dealer sets" on ebay, but the ones I've seen are in cardboard wallets rather than the plastic cases of the retail sets.
