Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but it seems the closest match.

If I decide to leave the car for a moment, engine running, transmission in park, as soon as I open the door and am half way out of the vehicle, the horn sounds for moment.

The vehicle is set to sound the horn after it's locked... but this is obviously different.

Is this a fault... or meant to be some sort of warning?

I've tried to find the answer in the manual, of course, but no joy: the usual needle in a haystack job.

Mine does not do this it does sound wrong to me, I have an E350 2016 model.

Try turning the audible lock warning off and see if it stops, this may help point you in the right direction.

Could be a faulty alarm? I think it's designed to beep when you arm the alarm and a door or boot isnt closed correctly. A warning to say your car isn't secure.

Just a stab in the dark.
