yesterday while trying to diagnose a fault with my W208 CLK320 Cabrio we lifted the carpet in the passenger footwell to check the little box under there and found lots of engine oil around the wiring loom. Has anyone else had this problem and do you know if it's serious and also where the hell the oil is coming from cos we could'nt see a point of entry but loads of oil. :D

Strange, but I read about the same problem on this same forum last night - try doing a search for "wiring". I will also try and will get back to you - it had a long story attached and lots of details.

The irony of this fault is that the fix is a cheapie - just a new oil seal around a plug on the gearbox basically. However, the potential damage of oil contamination to ecu's could write the car off in financial terms. If I were you, I wouldn't drive it and get it looked at pronto.

Hi,
Just for curiousity what fault were you tring to diagnose?
As it maybe related to the oil issue.

Thanks for all you replies. The original fualt with the car was that it would not start and that the ECU would not communicate with the scanner question I posted on here last night got the answer that the ECU was buggared!! (see CLK320 NOT STARTING) I will have a look at the SL500 thread. Can't belive how bad mercedes build quality has got, we've never had problems like this in the past and we've had mercs for the last 15 years. I'm amazed no-one's taken civil action against them like they did with rover for the poor build quality!!

just an update I have spoken to a most helpful man from this site who said the oil leak is nothing to worry about but the seals will need replacing and that it's common fault. My ECU IS buggared but aparently it's nothing to do with the oil leak it's just that as we've been stripping the car to find out the main problem we've stumbled across other minor issues!! Thanks for all you help tho )

My CLK 230K (W208) (772.6 auto transmission) is showing early signs of the same 'transmisson' oil (ATF) in the footwell issue.

Today I picked up the new plug (Called 'Spacer' on the packet) from my local MB part department in Faro.
It comes complete with the two 'O' ring seals fitted.
Part number: A 203 540 02 53
Cost was about 7 Euros including taxes.

Incidentally the part was made in the Czech Republic. German engineering from another country I guess ;)
