om606 Glowplug thread size?

Could someone please tell me what threads the GPs on my 606 have, so I can buy a suitable tap to ream the holes out?

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
I just measured across a spare with a ruler, the thread looks to be about 12mm across, and about 12mm deep. The nut on mine (Beru plug) is 12mm.

Cheers Parrot,

The parts bloke at Merc spoke to the mechs and reckon it's 1.25mm pitch, so I've bought a set of thread-restorers with a 12x1.25mm tap.

Just be sure to practice first on a scrap block of aluminium, just in case its too big :)

I've just remembered that one of them has already got a helicoil in, am I asking for trouble reaming this one? :confused: :shock:

Erm, I'm really getting a bit concerned about this now, can someone please tell me if the helicoil already fitted is going to be an issue?

Hi I wouldn't tap the helicoiled hole

You mentioned thread restorer tap ream in this thread

I'd be very careful tapping

youv'e bought thread-restorers, if they have flutes they will remove metal

I'd copper slip the new plugs and refit rotating 1/2 turn in and out till you get them to bottom out.

I've got some high-temp Rocol anti-seize for the new ones, but I'm keen to get all the crap out of the threads before they go in.
That thing looks ok it should go in without any forcing but I wouldn't use it on the helicoiled hole
Helicoils are ealily rotated after they have been fitted if it pick's up on the helicoil you won't no till you have moved it

It's not to bad that way round a least you can refit a new one

PS have you done all the plus gas etc thingy a couple of days previouse.

Bugger, just found the jobcard where the prechamber was removed :shock: the GP drilled out and a helicoil fitted, but it doesn't say which cylinder!

Does anyone have a part no. for the helicoils, should the worst happen? (Well, not the worst!)

Fact= Glowplug hole 12mm x 1.25mm, if its helicolied, do notuse tap in it, thread restorers tend not to centre up like a real tap, buy set of three taps, 1st 2nd and plug.

Have given up on helicoils, new thread inserts far better bet (except you need plenty of meat around them).

List of gloom in out workshop this year, exhaust stud in V-twin ducati motorbike broke, pencil glowplug in 2.2litre fronterra (M10x1.0mm) snapped off, ended taking head off both of these. To extract from the bottom

Oh... have seen 606 glowpulg hole welded up in the past, nice neat TIG job.

If you have problems I will make a sold stainless steel insert and post it to you with screw driver slot and tool to insert it with.
I will try and get insert thread dimentions for 12 x 1.25 of the internet our send a tap close to the thread and you can retap and fit insert

Just found that the helicol tap would probably be 14 x 1.25 I will have look in the morning for a tap that size 9/16 unf is not to far off any way lets see what happens

When I finally got to them, 5 of them came out without too massive a struggle, not exactly easy or confidence instilling, but they did come out. Cyl 3's refused to budge, and I am guessing that is the helicoiled one so after checking that it was a working plug I decided to play it safe (bottle it) and leave it alone.
