My roof was making a clicking / pinging noise when opening past halfway, but closed silently.

It was lubed at the last service by MB approx 8k ago back in March 2018.

I took it to my local indie who listened and felt where the noise was coming from - left side, and he sprayed some lube into the channel towards the back and told me to work it in, which I did.
The sunroof opened and closed twice and then refused to open. The sunshade opens and closes fine.
He initially thought the motor had overheated, but this is not the case.
This was 2 wks ago now and he cannot book it in to look at as he is too busy and moving premises!
I have scanned with MBII and the switches seem ok with the following fault registered: -
987223 the button 'roof system' sticks. No signal change. Voltage level is too low.

No fiddling or resetting makes any difference.

I have booked it in with another MB indie - Gemtech in romford - any clues as to what's wrong and feedback on Gemtech is appreciated.
I have a third party warranty that covers electrical failure should it be the motor.
Thanks

Sorry to ask the obvious but have you checked the fuse?
Fuse 37 in the boot is what I think it is upload_2018-6-6_23-4-15.jpeg

Thanks John, I did indeed check fuse 37 pulled it out and left it before refitting. I'm sure my fuse was 5A.
If it was a fuse, wouldn't this produce a fault code?

Thanks

No, it might show as a low voltage rather than anything else. The fuse should be brown 7.5a I thought?
I was working on a different device last night, this morning on this device I found my 212 fuse data and that seems to suggest fuse 17!

That fuse box is in the engine bay. Can’t say that’s the solution but definetely worth a check
I’m also now thinking something like a roof would need a 30a fuse surely?

The image above (post #2) shows fuse 37 as a 7.5amp, maybe 5A fuse blows as it’s too small?

If it has been ‘sticking’ then maybe that has caused the extra current draw. Pop in a 7.5A and retry, maybe giving gentle manual assistance to help it initially.

Hope it’s that simple!

the 5A fuse is fine and not blown - therefore it should still work - would a 7.5A make any difference? The roof was not sticking at all.

Fuse 17 is 30A. Not sure what to try next....

Time to get your multimeter out.....

Is there power at the fuse?
If yes, you need to check the switch, does it work? Plugged in properly, power at switch.

If no, check supply loom/relays/fuses.

Get access to roof motor, check connections, check power present when switch operated. :- if yes them maybe it’s the roof motor. But also check if there are any micro switches in the system which may stop operation ( you mentioned a pinging) along the track runners. Some systems have inhibitor switches to ‘fail safe’

Thanks, I've checked with icarsoft MBII and did live data stream which shows all switches actuated when pressed.

I'll leave it to gemtech on next week.

Thanks

thank John, that price is including the diagnostic fee, think the total is around £575.
My warranty should cover the motor less £100 excess.

Actually the part from my local dealer is £383 inc vat, so probably a couple of hours to fit?

Couple of hours is probably about right in main dealer terms , that part will be list price (especially if they are aware it’s warranty work?)- but in terms of your exposure of the £100 excess could be much worse

I'm very pleased a new cassette is not required as they cost a few £000's and my sunroof would be permanently shut!

Glad you got to the bottom of it, not a bad price for main dealer I suppose.
It’s not something you can ignore, I really like mine and use it a lot at this time of year.
