I have seen a Personal Registration plate on DVLA website for £255 but am not sure at what other costs will pop up when registering said plate and putting it onto the Merc, not sure of the process involved either.

Can anyone help???;)

The price DVLA quote includes the £80 registration fee. If you want to transfer the plate onto another vehicle later there will be another £80 fee. You will need to pay for new plates as well.

I've always gone directly to our local DVLA office when I have switched vehicles and the procedure has been slightly different each time. It used to be very difficult, both vehicles to be inspected and that sort of thing, but it just a bit of form filling these days.

I've just bought one for Slinky and it was £255 including all the fees. All I paid on top of that was the price of getting the plates made.

Send it off with the V5C, the V750 Certificate of Entitlement from the DVLA and valid MOT certificate for the vehicle. You will need to send a copy of the tax disc, if it was issued by a post office in the last 2 weeks.

Just waiting on the new tax disc to arrive and we're legal!

Hope that helps. :)

When I've swapped plates between vehicle I download the forms, fill out and post.
About a week later the confirmation comes back with replacement tax, new MOT cert and authorisation for new plates, then you need to change insurance.

Ah yes, the insurance company will have to know I suppose. You don't want them wriggling out of a claim, should the worst happen....

absolutely John - DVLA price includes the £80 transfer fee and all VAT.

Buying from a dealer would mean you then have to pay the £80 transfer fee when you put it on a vehicle, plus VAT.

Cost of plates (and fitting) may be extra but some garages used to provide (and fit) plates if their name featured on the plate. I don't know if they still do that in these straightened times.

I provide new plates for customers if we have to do a plate transfer and yes my name is on the plates.Reason being is a lot of people take the dealer sticker of the back window but they never change plates :)

as far as I can remember you pay the cost of the number plate (255) which I think includes vat + 80 pounds to registering the plate.

Just got my new tax disc back today, along with new MOT certificate, V948 Authorisation Certificate and the V5C/2 in lieu of the new V5C.

To summarise, transfer costs were all included in the £255 paid for the plate, the new number plates cost £30, but I did have to pay £27 to the robbing barstewards at my insurance company to change my policy. :)

I bought a new to me Mercedes this last week-end and I asked them to do the cherished registration number transfer. I had a call from them to-day and they tell me that they can't do and it has to be instigated by me under the current legislation regarding transfers. They said I have to put in on retention and then transfer it to the new car. The only problem now is I am on the Suffolk Coast and the V5 for my current Mercedes is in Ely, is that correct

If your plate was already on retention I cant see why the dealer couldn't do it? the rules keep changing mind and I can't keep up! Might be just easier to wait until youre back Andy and just do it all on line then- its quick when you do it that way, mine took less than a week all in

It's still on the old car John. I get the impression that they didn't want to sit on the car until the transfer was completed albeit they did come across as nice people to do business with, but of course we were at the selling stage then

Old thread revival John

I did my new reg recently, and was pleasantly surprised as to DVLA efficiency - took less than a week from purchasing the reg (not from DVLA) to receiving a new V5C, everything was done online. New metal pressed plates took two days to arrive.

That's probably it Andy!Ah well as said by GLK and as my experience you'll get it all done very quickly with DVLA's scary new efficiency!
