Position / side lights in my car are the most often replaced ones (yes, I know - it's because I like LEDs, but that can't be helped), and yet they are the most difficult to remove. Well, not the bulbs themselves, but the bulb holders.

In W169 the position light is accessed through the same hatch as the full beam, but it's tucked away off centre, and impossible to grab with your fingers.

As a result, I (and everyone else I suspect) end up pulling the holder by the wires, which is far from ideal, even if it's only once a year ... On top of that, one can't really see the holder, even with a mirror, it's a bit tricky.

I thought, I better come up with a better solution, as I just fitted a pair of new LED bulbs - who knows, if they stay good for a year, or go psycho blinking next month.

With that in mind, I made this contraption. It's not sexy and rough around the edges - literally, I'll smooth those over tomorrow - but it does the job, with my eyes closed, so pretty much as it is in real life ;)

I wasn't aware there was an OEM removal tool for W5W / 501 holder? Where one can acquire such a thing?

Depends on the lampmaker but if Valeo, they usually make a standard one...

Not the can-do attitude generally espoused among forum folk, but halfords change your bulbs for a fiver. Easy.

MB will probably be ale to sell you one for a daft amount David

Ha, no doubt. Still, I'll ask them - interesting to see it.
But seeing as the mounting wedge is over £25 for a flat piece of plastic ...

I shall have to DuckDuckGo it. :geek: What? I don't use Google :p

The plastic was still a bit too flexible, despite the wire pin, so I made another version - this is aluminium, and is essentially self-locating, as I don't have to rotate, or even touch, the bulb holder to align with the tool. Also the little screw helps a lot to keep it 'locked'.

Sure :) However, the point of this little contraption is not that I can't replace a bulb myself, but the way it designed, one ends up pulling the holder by the wires, as it's impossible to grip it with one's fingers.

I might do it slow and gentle, but do you think a Halfords employee would hesitate, to just yank it out and also, can you envisage said employee using clean cotton gloves to handle a bulb, so not to leave any oily marks, which will burn and bake in, destroying the integrity of the glass and shortening the bulb's lifespan?

What? A healthy dose of OCD never hurt anyone :)

When I was at uni, we had a lab test - a 70mm cine projector lamp (xenon, BTW) with an oily fingerprint literally burnt through the glass and blew up. One tends to remember (theatrical as they might be) things like that ...

500W sunfloods would do the same, you could change the bulb as much as you like, if you touched the glass it was toast.
