jim the pipes outside the radiator are not a problem .Its the tubes that are inside the radiator .
Which if you use a quality antifreeze are not a problem.
The Valeo ones didn't corrode - they had a manufacturing issue that caused them to crack.

This one is genuine and it was on the car from new. ..And as you know the coolant inhibitor is used for ever, after changing it out every three years .Its due to be changed now, because the three years are up this year . And i will change the engine oil and filter after 12 months and only 180 miles in use . Mot guy said -- you will have to watch it .I said to him why - he said you will wear it out ha ha ..

Ah,....... I see what you are getting at now. Yes, that's a distinct possibility, especially if the corrosion inhibitor / anti-freeze was not checked and topped up. ( as LostKiwi mentions ) I guess that like most other liquids in cars nowadays, the antifreeze and inhibitor need to be changed too, at regular intervals. But aside from regular checking of the level's ( and having changed the Engine, Transmission and Differential oil's recently, I am still in leak checking mode....... :) ) Other than that, what can you do? Wait for a fault to show itself in the Engine/ Transmission that would be attributed to the trans oil mixing with the coolant?

Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire......LOL. And was this a common fault in the w212's ?

For now, everything in the radiator expansion tank looks good, but in preparation for next winter, I will do a complete coolant change.

I have known some people, to bypass the radiator with the atf pipes by joining the feed and return together, just before they go into the rad.If you do not live in a hot country you can get away with it.

Well i do need to know if any other members had done this mod . But it looks as if no one has .
As I said it was done on my Land Cruiser which although not a Merc is exactly the same principle.

A better, neater job would be to lose that old steel pipework and connect the inlet and outlet at the trans bell housing unions?

And if you go down this road, why not fit a drain tap set up to facilitate trans oil changes????

Unless of course it was being replaced by a more effective part, personally, I would be reluctant to remove anything which was part of the original design. Especially as in this case it involves the transmission and doing any kind of towing.

This would be a good preventative solution if you had a Mercedes which was prone to leaking radiator- transmission problems. The one posted in your Link Lost Kiwi and fitted to a Land Cruiser, is there Mercedes specific one available, do you know?
No idea. I don't think there are many that are model specific. At the end of the day its just an oil cooler with an (optional) electric fan. No matter what you get you would almost certainly have to fabricate something to make it fit.
