I washed, polished and waxed my motor last week, cloudy but warm weather, perfect! Put all my kit away and then it rained absolutely buckets!

Then literally 5 minutes after, the sun came out and baked on all the water spots!

Is there anything I can do to stop this short of relocating to a property with a garage?? A layer of some different wax or sealant?

I won't wash her again now as the weather has been sunny and hot, and any cloudy patches last a few minutes before my paintwork is as hot as an Aga again.

Cheers,

A frustrated Harry.

Cannot remember mine being affected this way but due to lack of sunshine this year I may be wrong.

Unless the rain was sitting there and it was so hot as to bake the water mark on.

I will be interested in any answers.

Exactly the same thing happened to me on Saturday/ Sunday. Car washed and beautiful one day, dribbled on just enough to filthy it all up the next. Bah.

The only sure fire way is to keep your car under cover, carport or garage.

I use Bowden's Own car car products made here in Australia, and i dont seem to have this problem.

Whatever you do use, make sure it contains no salts or silicones because a hell of alot of products do, and it is not good for the paint.

Siles been there mate, and hate it . I go out and leather it off, a soon as it stops raining because i dont want this again on my car .I had a maroon humber hawk that was a problem every time the rain fell on it and the sun came out after, but i will go in time .They say its through polishing the car to much with polish. The hot sun bakes the water in to the paint..

Only way out is to leather the car off right away after its rained , thats if the sun wants to come out and dry it in to the body .You see in my avitar thay my car is out side all the time .The other day i used my leather to dry it off 4 times after it rained, and the sun came out really warm after each rain storm .If i had left it to dry, then i would have the same problem as you .I am lucky that i have retired now and time is pleanty. The other way is a cover to pop on it when it rains .You need a cover with a fleece interior . So it wont scratch the bady work.

Have a look at products that are described as quick detailers...they are sprays that will give a quick shine but more importantly a bit of lube to the drying process with your microfibre drying towel ( throw the leather away and never speak its name again :D ) . The microfibres trap dirt without using it to scour the paint like leathers do . It's the future buddy :)

My leather is synthtic and 1000 times better than micro cloths .Take a look at them in halfrods made by Autoglym .£9-99 .Lathers are no good . I used to clean caravans and cars for a living . Take my word for it . I am just coming to use micro clothes for putting the polish on , and one to get off . And i have picked up a a few spray bottles of Williams Waterless Wash and Wax . Plus 4 of the micro clothes in the deal . The polish is very nice to put on , and remove, But the finish wont last any longer than my Autoglym . So i will ask members now , just what you think is the best ? .

I have 2 of the AG synthetic drying cloths and they are the best that I know of, they also seem to improve with use.

Well worth the cost IMHO.

Headhurts nothing like them .I have used these synthetic leathers for 30 years before autoglym took them on from Minky . Minky stopped doing them , and a friend of mine took an old packet that one came in, just for the address .They were made in Sweden .He purchased the last few they had left .At one time i had one that i was useing and 5 spare , all from my friend .Then i saw these in Halfords 4 years back .So i thought i would give it a try .To my amazment they were made just the same as the early Minky i had to start with . Best thing i ever had to dry my cars off ,. And i still have 4 of these right now If others want to try them .Go to halfords and pick one up .If you dont like it , then i will give you your cash back in exchange for the synth leather

I use Kent Extra Large Microfibre Drying Towels and in my opinion they are the best. My experience Synthetic Leathers are that they are next best thing to useless. :)

The OP's issue with sun drying the newly washed car reminds me of when I had just purchased a nearly new VW Vento. It was bright red and shined like a good-un.

I had parked at my work place, which was in a small industrial estate. Whilst I was out working, it had rained hard and then the hot July sun had baked all the beads of water, leaving a multitude of white blobs all over the roof, boot and bonnet. Nothing seemed to shift them so I had to resort to T-cut, followed by a coloured polish thereafter.

One theory was that there may have been some "acid rain" type pollutants in the rain, plus the notorious blooming that red cars used to suffer from (though at the time, the car was only 3 years old).

None of my cars since have suffered the same, thankfully but I have had damage due to seagull poo, one lot even managing to get through the Williams Ceramic protection applied to my last S204 (the warranty at least covered that being rectified). My fault for living 2 roads back from the sea!

Hi AJD, I too have the Kent towels which absorb huge amount of water.

I use these to remove the initial wash water and finish with the AG synthetic which does a better job at finishing than the Kent towels.

Several issues working here I think.
1. Overpolishing - too much use of abrasive 'polishes' which gradually wear down the paint, products like AG SRP do this and leave no protection and hence water spots. Its better practice to wax the car so water falls off or beads, and use a non-abrasive paint cleanser to start with.
2. Water spots. Rain in itself is mildly acidic but what is leaving the spots is probably, in most cases, dust blowing onto the beads of water or dust/atmospheric particles brought down by the rain. Like when we get Sahara dust brown in from North Africa. In the later case using a chamois not recommended (smooth surface of chamois traps grit grains to smooth paint and creates a lovely scourer, which is why cloths have a pile to absorb it). Using a water filter like the Race Glaze one leaves no water spots but obviously wont assist when it rains.
3. Towels - waffle cloths absorb more water than fluffy towels but not much between them. We sold a chamois today, its a rare event...
4. Wiping over with a soft fluffy cloth and Quick Detailer, loads to choose from, is best for a 'dry/dryish' wipe over - lubricates and helps lift the dust/spots rather than dragging them off.

Just move to the west coast of Scotland as it never stops ****ing down , so the drying process never really completes.

I have been trying to get some stone chips touched up for weeks now but there never seems to be a run of dry weather to get on with it.
