If there was ever a place for the 'Guide Dogs for the Blind' man not to stand with his tin, it was outside the petrol station. What was the matter with him, had he never driven a car? He had a nice dog though so I gave him £2...that is ten miles worth at todays prices.

Diesel is like putting Linux into your computer.

Didn't I read somewhere that the entepreneurs of the paramilitaries in the island of Ireland had been dumping the residue that they had used to remove the dye and it was pretty toxic stuff. (I dont think it was kitty litter, btw how much is that stuff? - I keep dogs).
I have seen the customs checking diesels. They seemed to target Landrovers and big Mercs. They don't dip the tank as members of the travelling fraternity have dip tanks full of the real stuff. The inspectors disconnect the feed line and sample from that. There is a travelling lab on site to test for trace elements I'm told, not just the dye.

kitty litter, fullers earth, might remove the colour but wont remover the marker chemical

when c&E or whatever they are called this week do road side tests they look for the marker compound.

There are a lot more testing teams about these days, & they frequently target areas where red is leagally available.

by the way in the older engine the red is better as the higher sulphur content lubricates the injection pump better.

Have been running boats on the stuff for in excess of 20,000 hours without problems,

Many a long year ago I had a Land Rover. One day, when I was just coming out of a filling station, I was stopped by one of these outfits. They said they wanted to "dip my tank". I said they were wasting their time. "Are you trying to obstruct us?"..."No I'm simply telling you you're wasting your time"..."Will you let us dip your tank?"..."Yes, but your wasting your time."...round and round it went. Eventually they dipped my tank. "Well this is petrol!!!".. "Yes, I told you you were wasting your time." ......." Well what is all this diesel staining doing round your filler cap.".. " It used to have a diesel engine in but, like all 2litre Land Rover diesel engines, it blew up, and I put a petrol engine in."
Sadly, for them, the earth did not open up beneath them, as they would have wished.

Red Diesel +++++ tracers

Removing the dye will not stop you being detected if you are stopped by C&E.
There are also "tracers" added which not only identify that the diesel is from a RED source, but also the source and which batch it came from.

There was a bit on TV the other night informing the public of how much the Chancellor expects those using veggie oil to pay him, (Can't remember exactly how much) but he had two rates, one for new oil and another for used. It seems that he expects that such users will self declare their use and send him the tax he wants.

Aircraft hydraulic fluid does the job - removes all the staining!Just add to tank as you would Redex! Available from farm/tractor supply shops as its used in tractor hydraulics!
Incidentally its also coloured red.
I learnt this very many years ago......
Also I drive a petrol Land Rover and a petrol Merc so I gain no benifit from this advice!

Total cr.p

Anyone who takes any of this stupid cr-p advise being given on here about, cat litter and other substances used to change the colour of red diesel is in danger of at least wrecking there fuel pump through contamination, The only ones to really get near to cracking it were the Irish, but when a mechanic touched the diesel, guess what, it mostly burnt his hands through added chemicals. I have heard and seen it all, from owning heavy plant and trucks.

Try using the proper stuff and be proud you are supporting your government, who will waste your money where they are not wanted, like Iracq !

My working life was spent initially working in and finally managing laboratories. During the sixties I spent a few hours taking the red out of diesel. It can be done. But.... removal of even the old type of dye, to be done untracebly, cost more than the saving achieved by using it. Removing the current stuff properly must cost even more. Activated charcoal was very good, but the stuff cost more than "white" diesel. The best solution is to turn your attention to removing the national scourge that causes the high cost in the first place!!! Yes, the freeloading carpetbaggers with their noses firmly embedded in the Westminster trough.

Unless someone tells me otherwise I would have assumed that burning vegetable oil is much better for the environment, much better than mineral coal, or oil, because it returns C02 which it has already used up in growing. Should the government therefore not encourage it rather than punish it?

My understanding is that the government DOES encourage it. If you use vegetable oil in your car on the road, you are supposed to decalre it and pay tax on it. However, that tax is considerably lower than for petrol/diesel AFAIK.

Red diesel is gas oil. White diesel, DERV, is differant and has the sulphur removed or greatly reduced. Use red diesel in a Cat equipped or common rail modern engine and you will damage it. No ifs or buts. It will work well on old generation diesels, but may be a bit smokey. The red dye will stain filters. Chances of being dipped depends upon where you live.

Vegatable oil works well on its own in older generation diesels, but gets gloopy in cold weather which can lead to filter plugging. You can add a few litres to DERV in winter to save a bit of money. I have no experience of vegatable oil in a modern Merc engine.

I have a friend who has run his old Peugeot 306 on veg oil for the past 18 months. He says it runs better as a veggy, but he has to mix it with DERV in cold weather.

I personally prefer to stick with the white stuff. If economy is an issue, slow down and pump up your tyres...
