It was confirmed by Which? magazine and Mercedes themselves that the last batch of mercs, up to 3 years old were unreliable. MB had problems with qualitycontrol
Why pay megabucks for inferior products. You just paying for the name.
Older mercs (pre 1999) were much solid and reliable

yes they are less reliable, which means 4 or 5 things go wrong instead of 1 or 2. but a 2 year old motor is under mb warranty so they'll fix it. Not entirely convenient, but an MB is still better to drive than most other motors and it still only means a couple of extra visits to the dealer. The solid 'feel' is still there in bucket loads. True, considering, they cost too much, but I haven't seen the resale value crash yet so ypu'll still get more back.
THe quality dipped when mine was built. Yes, its nowhere near as reliable as my 95 C and has cost more to run as a result, but I thrash her up and down motorways every day and she runs as sweet and silent as they day I collected her from the showroom and to be honest in the last 12 months / 25k, she hasn't missed a beat. I am hoping that all the bits that are going to fail, have already gone.

We would all like a new one, but I think there is a middle phase, around 3-6 years when a merc is at its best. Up to 3 years, they are still a bit too tight, at 6 years / 60k mine is livelier than ever, gearchanges still seamless , and she retains the solid rattle free feel of a new one. Every time I drive a new one, I get back into mine and have the same thought - yes it's nice, but its not £20k nicer - and I drive away.
