I believe a factory fitted Engine Control Unit(ECU) drains £1180 off your wallet. I note a lot of MB specialist companies are offering to repair or replace these at lower costs and a 1 year warranty. Are there any risks for the future in repairing ? Will it in anyway mismatch the software or programming that run these units ? Advice please !

Try a company called bluestreak.

They will tell you before hand if the unit can be repaired, something alot of companies do not, and then charge you anyway

www.actronics.co.uk are very good and do not charge for what they cannot do and give a full 12 months guarantee

Got the ECU replaced by reconditioned one. Total cost = £800 including programming, fitting and cost of ECU. It took me one month to sort out the car. So far so good and driving well. Both keys are working fine. Thanks for all help from forum members.

Replaceing gear and engine control Units

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum, actually I just signed up. I'll be glad to get your help so please tell me if this post actually should be here or somewhere else.

I have a friend with a Mercedes C230 year 2006 2.5 ltr
The car was washed in a flood and was fiddled with in a workshop which didn’t succeed to make it drive so they sold it to a yard. What they did was replace the engine control Unit, that’s how he actually bought the car, knowing he has to invest some $$$ to replace the engine’s and perhaps the tranny’s control units to make the car go. Yes he got the car for almost a 50% off when he bought it from the yard.
I’m trying to help him out as his English is poor and am trying to find out, the following;
- Do we need to buy new control Units to replace the tranny and engine’s? I was told if I do not have the original control units I cannot use a used part from another car but only new. Why? Because the car’s data needs to be transferred from the old CU (control Unit) to the new used one, and since we do not have it we need to buy only a new one, as it’s impossible to use used CU’s from one car to another in the Mercedes world
Any one has any idea what so ever?
Thanks in advance for your help.

It would be a good idea if you went back to the opening page of this forum, select "Electrics/vacuum/Ignition and ecu" section and then started a new thread on your problem. You should only tag onto a current thread if your question or comment is relevant to that thread.
Welcome to the forum.

On a 1996 model there is no electronic ignition lock so you will just require the engine ECU, I believe.
The gearbox is probably the 722.4 four speed hydraulic box, not the 722.6 five speed, so no gearbox ECU either.

Thanks

First, I wanna thank you for you help and welcome,
secondly I would like to know if it's possible to move these posts we posted here today to the location oigle suggested "Electrics/vacuum/Ignition and ecu".

-Alexander, why isn't it recommended to use a second hand ECU?
-If so, is a new one my only alternative? Where and for how much can I purchase one?
-Is that true for the gear control Unit too?

Thanks.

a second hand ecu will not work, and it is either very difficult, or impossible, to make a s/h ecu work on this car. the reason why is all to do with security, and mercedes are usually the most difficult cars to beat when it comes to security! i suggest spending at least a little money with a very good specialist or a franchised MB workshop for an assesment of exactly what is needed, and if it is just the engine ecu go for genuine new parts fitted by MB.
