Replacing glow plugs

Having been told I have three defective glow plugs on my recently-acquired CLK320CDI, I have had a look around the forum to see if this is a reasonable DIY job for someone who has done a lot of minor maintenance work on his old 300CE for many years. And I seem to come across conflicting opinions. (Surprise!)

Some say "don't risk it - pay your local centre £100 to do it for you". But there are two very helpful threads on the DIY section that seem to suggest that, with care and commonsense, this is not a difficult job, and can be done in most cases without much risk at all.

Any thoughts from the experts, please?

There is always a risk of a plug snapping or its corners becoming rounded so you cant turn it, get the engine hot before you try to remove them.
Use a good fitting spanner and avoid applying any force to it which would tend to bend the plug rather than twist it, with luck they will come out.
Dousing them with penetrating oil some time (days) before you attempt removal might be beneficial.

That's as far as your £100 quid would take you, any problems (rarely insurmountable) which arise will cost more, mostly on man hours.

Read as much as you can and have a go.

The good fitting spanners are essential.

Wow! After 340 views and no responses I was getting worried!

Thanks wireman - I shall give it a go, but keep my fingers crossed!
