so I was chatting with my mechanic today, and he asked me if I knew what is missing from the back of the injector pump, we compared the one on the engine with the one I bought on Ebay and both have the same protruding shaft with a groove cut in, and a threads for attaching something,

here's some photos with a red arrow pointing at what we think is missing, do any of you know WHAT it's missing and whether it's needed or not, thanks in advance...

well while waiting i did my own research and spent some dollars to download the manual's - what a nightmare they were, they wouldn't work (flash based...) in a modern os, so I had to install an XP vm, and try that way, eventually managed to find this...

So in the manual it shows nothing fitted there either? Maybe it is a ‘spare’ take off for an option, aircon? The positioning is odd as there isn’t much space there.

The shaft looks like the slot is for a woodruf key and then threaded at the end for a nut. The mounting face doesn’t look like anything has been removed, as it looks uniformly dirty. ?

Maybe it is a manufacturing oddity from holding/machining the shaft?
Or facilitated testing pump?

thanks, it is indeed a woodruf key groove (that's what my mechanic said), but i've still no idea what it's for, the manual didn't reveal anything yet, i'd love to know that i'm not actually missing something,

could it be like this for the placement of a tool when removing/adjusting the injector pump ?, if so what's that tool and where do i find it, i.e. do I need it ?

Have you tried asking on other Benz forums, you may find other owners who can shed some light on it?

With it having a woodruff key then it is almost certainly for the fitment of a pulley, and the shape of the pipe nearby allows for a pulley and belt.

From Wiki,
the OM 636 was first used as a passenger car engine in the Mercedes-Benz W 136 starting in 1949. Later, it was sold as an industrial engine and had many applications in vehicles such as light trucks, boats, and combine harvesters. It was succeeded by the OM 621. However, after the introduction of the OM 621, the OM 636 was kept in production until 1990.

Bilge pump?

ok but do you think i'm ok with it the way it is now (i.e., nothing is connected to it...is that by design ?)

It will be fine. Just be careful if you have your hand in there with the engine running, - any clothing caught on the screw thread, and it will get painful and messy very quickly !!!!!!!

Maybe fashion a little guard/ cover to avoid problems?
Make one in cardboard, then trace it onto some aluminium sheet?

The original Diesel Ponton power brakes were not a factory option only on petrol versions. Is the Diesel pump original?

IMG_5537.JPG IMG_5539.JPG IMG_5540.JPG IMG_5541.JPG IMG_5542.JPG so.. i've been away from the car (both physically and mentally, I find the challenge and issues a pain, so much so that i choose to ignore it for as long as i can), anyway, i dropped over to my mechanic today and he did a pressure test, all ok he said, and in his opinion the engine will be fine once we get the spare parts listed below,

the pistons (and everything else) are out and I've now got the task of cleaning up the rockers/valves part of the engine and that's a task I'm readying myself for,

he believes the engine is in good enough shape to fix, I've just ordered the following spare parts

  • new frost plugs
  • new piston rings
  • a gasket set
  • replacement water pump

and today i bought valve grinding paste and will scour the internet to learn about the correct way to clean up the valves etc..., here's some photos of the engine with the pistons (and everything else) out.

To clean the existing valves, either put them into a pillar drill, or if not available, a power drill secured to a vice, get them spinning (not too fast) and then use Emery paper to polish them.

For 'lapping' them, I have in the past used the sucker from a hand held tool placed over the head of a suitable set screw (fully threaded bolt), along with a nut wound fully up the thread, and then used an electric drill.
