Hi guys, seen a D plate 1987 Rover SD1 for £525.00 on EBay. I like it and might purchase it as an old banger just to get me round town.
Any suggestions or opinions are most welcome.

Don't. They dissolve in piles of rust if you even spit at them. The 2.6 was not a good engine and horrendously thirsty. Electrics are appallingly unreliable.

I had one. Probably the worst rover ever built (apart from the 2300 SD1 perhaps).

I bought a 2001 210 E240 7 seater estate on Gumtree under a year ago. Cost me £600. Bought it as a bus for trips to France. It's done 4 trips so far with only a £50 crank position sensor required.

There are better bangers than SD1s.

It won't get you round town, it will get you way further into the not having a working car league.

Go and buy a Focus!

There's a warning there if they're shifting it on so quickly!

Oh the E240 also passed an MOT with no issues 2 months ago!

Back in the 80's the most common place you saw an SD1 was at the side of the road with the bonnet up !!

Were the SD1s really that bad? I thought the police used them? I saw a couple in the liver run of 1987 on police camera action.

Yes they were dreadful. Shocking. Biodegradable like you wouldn't believe, poor engine, poor powertrain, leaky weather seals, rattly trim parts, and that was when new.

AVOID IT!

The SD1 3.5 litre V8 was the best of the bunch and yes the police liked them a lot. Yes they rusted but no more than any other 80s car, would I buy one as a runabout no, go and buy yourself a Focus MK1 they are brilliant providing they haven't been abused

I bought a 79 plate V8 SD1 at 15 months old and the car was one of the most reliable I've owned, the paint wasn't great, I still have the car but they have no value other than curiosity

Callum looks for new (old) car.
Asks for opinions.
Ignores opinions.
Asks why his car turns to rust overnight.
Gets told it was like that when he bought it but the rust was painted the same colour as the body.
Goes to bed and wakes up at 6am.

2017 '17' Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCi ST Line X 180 (sorry)
sorry but I agree with all of the above about the SD1.

a lad on our mechanics course at college 25 years ago had 1 for a brief spell as a work runabout. it was a pile of sh!t THEN! and they haven't improved with age!!!! the 2600 engine in his was thirstier and way more gutless than the 2.8i Capri that a guy a few houses down the road from me had at the time. if you insist on insanely old cars, at least buy something WORTH buying. at least then, the money you are throwing at it constantly will give you some return. Ford RS models, Capri's, mk1 & 2 Escorts, Ford Puma's, Mercedes 190s, Golf mk1 especially GTi, proper Minis etc just to name a few examples, all worth buying, all still reasonable for day to day parts, all will give a sound return on money you put into them. perhaps difficult to find them in the £5-600 price bracket, but worth spending the extra. if you want to do the 'classic' car thing, then please at least do it PROPERLY and buy something actually worth OWNING and worth putting up with the hassles of owning such old vehicles
