S Class 320 2007
Hi, this is my 1st visit to this forum. Previously driven Q7's, Disco, 535, A6, XF.

I bet I'm not the 1st to be faced with this difficult choice of E or S and if there is a thread out there that already exists then please direct me.
*Is there really that much difference in ride comfort
*not that much difference in running costs?
All reviews indicate that the E is serene in motorway cruising and cite the S as better! Mpg appears only 4/6mpg difference. Also the cost of purchase is roughly the same!
Looking at either under 100k and will be travelling 400mls/week and 5 x France/yr.

Any views, 'watch out fors' greatly accepted.

Happy Easter to all

difference in ride, Yes, S is much better built, why do you think it cost so much more in the first place.

Running costs if that's just fuel probably not, but its the maintenance costs and how you want to do it, main dealer, Indy or self.

S have a lot of expensive bits that can go wrong, then again so does the e. but the s will cost more in maintenance

Like many mercs now, they are easy and cheap to buy but its the "running costs" that catch people out.

for your travels I would always go for the s, effortless cruiser

S is bigger, a lot better made, superior ride and comfort but can give some big bills if sick.

E is cheaper to run and maintain but which one do you want ?
emotion has to play a part.

Hi Sime and welcome to the forum. I don't have any personal experience of the E or S Class but, having looked at the list of cars you have had in the past, I suspect you would be very happy with the comfort in either of those Mercs.

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
S class is better drive quieter and smoother
Get one with all the toys, night vision and front rear massage seats etc

Bills are bigger with air ride and some electronics that play up, and road tax (VED) is more than E class @ £515

Make sure you have the mileage confirmed and not just with MOT's but have the EIS scanned with MB Star or mileage tool, S and E classes are the tool of the trade for Taxi drivers and Chauffeurs.

Welcome- not easy to answer in short.....go with what you feel you want- both are great cars, the S is the lap of luxury and it seems that you hint that that's where your priorities are so.....

service contract costs on the MB website will give you a comparison of average service costs - but a good independent dealer will be worth considering as cheaper for a 2007 or 2009 car. Service history of particular cars you are looking at will also give you an idea of how well that particular car has been maintained - and is likely to be.
A well loaded S class is likely to have more bits that could need attention than a base E class. But a good S class is a better ride than an E class - think reliable taxi versus reliable chauffeur car. A better wine is more expensive than a good wine.

Again, thanks for your comments. Decided on SClass and picked up a 320 on 59 plate mid May 17. What a ride! 11, 000 miles since then. Superb motor no regrets, despite radio cutting in and out.
