I travelled to Millbrook yesterday with a friend in his GLE Hybrid, he set the route in the Mercedes Command system and into his TomTom.

I noticed that the alerts from the Command software was way later than his TomTom and this is something I have noticed in mine, the alerts which lane to use are too late particularly when the roads are busy and you need to chose your lane.

I also tested out the Apple and Google maps and these also give much earlier warnings.

I have the latest maps available (I think) but wondered if these alerts can be changed by the dealership and if so are the alerts part of map updates or Command updates.

Why have I not asked my dealership?

From past experience I trust forum advice far more.

I have booked car into dealership for possible update of Command under warranty but they can only update apparently if there is a known issue.

Shame I have to book car in just to see if there is an update that will rectify this issue.

To clarify the warnings when approaching roundabouts on normal roads is fine and gives plenty of warnings on which turn to take.

But on duals approaching roundabouts it comes when virtually onto the 200yd marker chevrons which is way too late particularly when roads are busy.

I would be interested to know if anyone else notices this lateness in warnings.

Other than this issue the navigation has worked fine.

is this just a case of you only driving on voice instructions, rather than checking what's coming and knowing what and when to do things, the voice should just be a nice extra confirming what you were expecting

200 yards is plenty, I suggest you turn off the voice and practise regularly checking how long to the next manoeuvre and taking a cursory glance at the map confirming its this junction...

your way is a perfect way to get lost, as on complex junctions your hoping something like "turn left" makes sense....

I really wish I could turn of the idiot big picture preview jumping up and ruining what was clear before, but is now hideous mess of a big picture on top of what's needed.... a roundabout is a great example ! if I had the normal map I can see where I am and count the number of exits.... but up pops this rubbish lagging a bit and missing where I was so you have no idea

200 yds is no where near enough notice when the roads are busy and traffic is queuing, that is why TomTom, Google and Apple maps give way more warning so you can position the car in the correct lane rather than try to force in or hope someone gives way.

As I mentioned this issue only seems to be on the multi carriageways on my car.

I dont know London and went to the O2 last weekend in the end I cancelled the Mercedes Satnav and used Apple maps as the warn you well in advance.

Of course I’m looking at the map also but if TomTom, Apple, Google etc can give the heads up way before even reaching the distance markers then I’m sure Mercedes can manage it.

What I’m actually asking is if this is normal for my car or a software glitch.

When I rely on MB sat nav I always set the display inside the speedo to show nav commands.
It shows how long you will be on the road before the next turn. Makes a huge difference.

You'll love it, I do.

Good for approaches to turns but also great when it says 20 miles to the next turn.

Yup I also do what LJohn does too - that said my XC90s Nav is much more verbally informative- for example when you enter a slip road off the motorway which leads to s roundabout or split lane it will immediately without delay tell you which lane to be in as you enter said slip
