I wouldn't take too much notice of your workmate.

Presently, if you ignore the plans for diesel scrappage schemes, the Government is reported to want to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles after 2040.
The problem is, the government would need to build 10 new power stations to cope with the extra power needed to charge replacement elevtric vehicles.
Something will change eventually, but I don't see anything happening to our current cars.

I think the key is in your words "want to ban" .
Lets face it they cant even get a mandate for Brexit! They will have to avoid any contentious legislation.
If the Conservatives pushed it .. they would be seen as fat cats hitting the impoverished
If Labour pushed it they would be hitting their core heartland supporters.
And by then the Greens will have access to the true evidence of the damage the new Battery Industry will be doing to the Environment ... mineral mining, associated deforestation and disposal issues. :-/

I think Hybrid will expand beyond belief, and they will just keep on tweaking things with new car emmissions taxation.
Sadly they will probably be able to kill off the new, petrol only, muscle cars by then. But as for taking the old cars off the road ... hmmm it would be a brave PM who tried that. :-/

Oh aye, but the point is I don't want to have a monthly outgoing of that size. Paid for my current car free and clear. Why should I get into debt?

Agree
I fear were on a 'Electric is the future' trip here by people who are making claims they cannot possibly back up
if you have a spare 10 mins watch this U tube by an Aussie motoring journalist, watch it to the end, it makes sense and is amusing but does pose some real questions
it is mainly aimed at Tesla but applies to EV's in general

Yep
He touched opon a number of the issues, this guy explained to me. And he is in the business!
( and making a fortune at it).
In sumarry, he felt this current technology would make it essential that we go this route.
But once the cat was out of the bag, then the whole thinking process would have to have a c change.
Fundamentally the current technology wont deliver the "save the planet" echo factor!

As he said in physics, you basically cant get something for nothing!

The government want to ban the sale of solely-IC powered vehicles by 2040.

I've been having some discussions here and looked into the direction behind it. There's nothing at all stopping manufacturers offering a hybrid IC-EV solution with, say, a 6 litre V8 650bhp engine and a 2kW battery with wheelchair motors tied into the transmission for parking and (very) low speed/ heavy traffic only operation. That totally complies with the government direction.

So, as long as the desire is there for the bigger engine cars, the solution will be there. Market forces remember.

The way to force the better solutions is a complete blanket ban on ALL petrol and Diesel engines. This includes Shipping, Commercial, transport and Agricultural vehicles too.

Only then will we get a true solution. But the governments of the world don’t have the balls to join together and force it. Any small amount of countries that did would just suffer economically.

I know what people will say (as had a similar discussion elsewhere). What about the cost to the consumer? My counter argument would be that if the geeks of the world can’t come up with a solution in TWO DECADES and mass produce at the same or lower cost than now. Then we are aren’t as clever as we like to think!

Barack Obama summed it up quite nicely when he did the survival program with Bear Grylls. Bear asked him what he thought the biggest issue in the world was in tackling climate change. Obama replied ‘old people’ long story short he basically said that people of his generation needed to move out of the way and let the brilliant young minds work their magic. But all to often the likes of the OPEC cartel etc get in the way and stifle innovation.

We will get there eventually. But somewhere along the line it’s going to take a no. of countries with balls to force a solution.

Or, the alternative argument to this could be that the existing solution of an internal combustion engine linked to a battery grid and motor setup is still the optimal cost & tech solution for that particular problem. A bit like how some propellant and a chunk of lead is still more applicable than a personal laser raygun- there is plenty of development potential left, performance is still well within desired boundaries and total cost of acquisition meets budgets.

NB asking Obama the biggest issue in the world re climate change is a funny one... he put that as the US' biggest strategic enemy at one point.
