Hi,

I have unfortunately managed to put some scratches into the windscreen when de-icing in a rush.
If you run your finger nail across you can feel it. As the car is only two months old it is really bugging me as this is its first damage. A couple of the scratches are in my line of sight and would really love to get them out or at least improve them.

I have tried Autoglym glass polish which may have helped a little, not sure.

Autoglass state on their site they cannot help with scratches and would only replace the screen which is too drastic.

Anyone used any professional companies to "polish" glass scratches out?

Any other products I can try myself that do not involve machines at all?

Thanks

Unfortunately automotive glass is very tough material, and does not respond well to being polished, Virtually impossible by hand but can be done with specialist tools. However you've got to be careful of flattening a particular section of a curved windscreen which might cause a lenseng effect (if thats a word. Might have made that up, but you get the idea).

There are specialist out there who can do this properly for you.

If its considered dangerous driving at night / in the rain etc, would your insurance company consider replacing it for you?

Empty garage, awaiting new toy :)
The windscreen is soft glass and can be polished with jewellers rouge.

As mentioned, avoid distorting the screen when removing a scratch.

Replacing a screen can be a lottery dependant not so much on the company used by your insurers as the actual operative that does the replacement. I've had a 968 screen done by Autoglass (near Liphook), told me only a cabriolet screen was available for my coupe - when other forum members got proper top tint coupe screens. Also the fitter damaged the paint and hid the damage under the rubber screen surround seal - cost me £350 3 years later when the paint bubbled!

On the other hand, I had to have the S204 screen replaced twice (near Ashford) in the space of 4 months a couple of years ago, AA windscreens and a fitter who was absolutely superb - plus the care they took before sending the fitter to ensure they got exactly the correct screen, first class and cannot fault them.

What did you scrape with that caused the damage?

It will scratch itself , with just the wipers working , with dirt or grit from the roads.
I never use my wipers with the on off mode on the timer . It will wipe the windows screen weather they are wet or dry . And after a few years all car have the ark shape marks where the blade travels .

A reasonably slow speed buffer and a cheap bag of jewellers rouge (£3)..
You mix the rouge up with water and make a runny paste, plaster it all of the buffing pad, then polish adding lots and lots of water as you go. If you dont add water it scrathes the glass!
toughened, laminated or standard glass, makes no difference as the hardness of the glass does not change with tempering.
As frontstep pointed out, stay to long in one spot and it will create a small dip in the glass.
It does work very well though as i have polished out some "grand canyons" in years gone by !
You could try by hand but would be there for a fair while !
