Over the last 12 months there have been lots of questions about the sealed for life 7.22 auto gear boxes. These are fitted to most cars from around 94-95

I found an update tonight from the service info, and it says.

Oil and filters in these boxes should be changed at 60k miles, at least it solves the debate.

Hi Malcolm,
The debate about 'sealed for life boxes' which actually has been going on for a lot longer than 12 months is refering to the 722.6 transmissions which (i think) made their first appearance in 1997......the earlier boxes that you are refering to (94/95) have always had an oil change service schedule at 60k.

Hi Pano, I am only refering to the 722. 6 boxes, as these were the first sealed for life gearboxes. I forgot to put the 6 in on the end, I was not sure what car was the first to have it fitted though I have info from 1996 on it. how long the debate has been going on exactly I do not know as I have only posted on this site since NOV 05. So if I re do.

I have found an MB service document saying that the oil and filters should be changed at 60k on the 722.6 gearbox.

...........that led me to believe you were talking about the earlier 722 series boxes ......and not the later post 96/97 722.6 series.

Hi Malcolm
I hope that your new car is performing as well as it looks.

Re. the gearbox info, on oil change intervals, my car is coming up to 50K and I was wondering when to do the change. Now I know, so thanks for posting the information.

Its a pleasure, I found the info when looking through the 1,958 pages of updates and info on mine, other things that have changed is that the brake fliud is now changed every two years, irrispective of milage.

Re your box, from the postings that we have had, maybe sooner is better than later, if brake fluide can take in moisture, maybe that transmission fluid can, but I do not know for sure on that.I do know that most that have changed it remark that the changes are smoother. My last 129 at 40k had much harsher changes at times than this new one at 16k. I will do mine at 25k , that will be in several years time though. None of us know if we have a little filing or bit of the casing in the box.

Back to polishing, malcolm
