I had a "C" service on my 220 CDI today, and looks like I'll
need a "D" service in approx 12k miles.

Does anyone have a list of what a A, B, C ,D etc service covers ?
My handbook is no good - it refers to 1,2,3 etc services,

A = Oil Change and tyre kick
B = Major Service (Wheels off)
C = Major Serive with some age related work - I don't know for sure, what did you have done?
D = Diagnostic Service (Plug it in and empty wallet)

Thanks for the explaination of the codes, BCat
What did I have done ? Well, invoice says oil/filter parts (at £72+ vat!) were fitted (and that was it - no pollen filter etc). Invoice just say C service completed in line..blah blah. Total cost £353
It is one year old, so that might help ?
You have me worried about the D service! Though this is some time off, anyone had one done recently? I'd prefer to stay with MB, (though I know we're not tied to them as long as the right parts are used) at least for the warranty period , to save any aggravation if something does go wrong...

A bit more detail pls, how many miles have you done. MB are normally pretty good at breaking down the invoices in full detail.

Prior to going over due was the service indicator showing an 'A' service? I do not profess to know the new ASSYST system that well, however on the older one (mine) once the car goes over around 13,000 miles it switches to a 'B' service. However there is also a time element which the ASSYST sytem works on as well as the oil quality. If you have been filled up with MB spec fully synthetic oil and if the ASSYST is programmed correctly you should be showing just less than 13,000 miles to the next service.
I am thinking that the car was due an 'A' service until recently then because of miles/time it switched to a 'C'.

I bought it back in may with 5K on the clock - and at that time, it was telling me a C service was due in approx 7.5k miles. (never saw A or B) Though I do long runs, the mileage element stayed constant (ie it didn't go up/down) though the days did start ticking down. (I have read somewhere on a US site that the first service is "capped" at 12,500 ish miles, to allow everything to bed/run in before the first oil change)
I have had 5/40 syntehic put in this time , and it's saying 12,300 ish to the next (D) service. (so looks like they've caught me for bringing it in 700 miles late!!) Will be interesting to see if this 12,300 actully extends over the next few months.

Not seen any reports from new owners, however the older systems do increase over time and also increase if you need to top the oil up. When mine is due an 'A' service I usually get it done 'early' around 13,000. When it is due a 'B' I let the ASSYST decide which is around 17,000. I have around 2 services per year. Last was an 'A' just over 8,000 ago and it is showing 7,500 to go to a 'B' service so by the time it is due it will be around 17,000.
To check if yours increases switch to the service menu at the start of a long journey then see how much it drops at the end of the day. If less than 1:1 it is increasing :D

I find that very odd. Could be a fault in the ASSYST programme. Blobcat will know more than me but I have never had, or seen or heard of a Merc saying it needs a C service after 5k miles. I would chat to the service manager unless Blobcat comes back and says it is fine. Mine has done over 13,000 and is still saying A service in 2700 miles.

Spoke to a guy in a Mercedes service department and he said the letters stand for A for 1 hour; B for two hours; C for three hours and so on. It is 'rough' guidance to the service department when you are booking the car in as to the time they need to allocate.

Never heard that before. No idea if it is true. But that is what he said.

I think you answered me on other thread about this but my Jan 2005 slk had to have a "B" service done a couple of weeks ago only 7500 miles approx on clock.(I bought it in June this year with 5500 approx ob clock MB did serv free then dented my door) It is now showing 9500 approx to "D" service. To me this is a bit low???
I looked at filters but couldnt really tell if changed or not and I was not given an invoice for work carried out and my book was stamped and signed but no other parts filled of book filled in( pollen filter et changed).
I am beginning to suspect that all they did was reset my service indicator as when car came back the mileage that I had set from new (2000 odd trip miles) was at a completely different number (5500) with total miles 7500.
Any ideas on this it looks as though the difference from when I purchased the car had been taken from total mileage on the trip mileage...7500 total minus the 2000 done from purchase leaving the 5500 at purchase.
Sorry if this is confusing 'cause it is confusing me as i write it.

It looks to me as if it has had an oil change, although 9500 to next service implies that the ASSYST system is not set for fully synthetic oil. In the service book they normally write what type of oil was used. It should be a Mobil 1.

You have the right oil (or at least the paperwork) so you could ask the garage to reset your ASSYST as it not working on Mobil 1 settings. See what they say.

What should it be roughly for Mobil 1 miles till the "D" service? The car has done about 7700 miles in total from new (jan 2005), do you think they have reset assyst for "D" and will hit me fo a "B" really in 9500 miles instead when I take it in!!!

After a service with Mobil 1 you should have just less than 13,000 to next service showing. How the ASSYST decides which service is due on newer cars appears to be a bit of a lottery. Older ones of A & B plus some age related bits was quite easy (to me).
