I'm buying a 2004 e240 ? it's done 161,000 miles, I see the car on shpock and decided to buy it without seeing it, I know I'm taking a big chance but it looked so good for the money £2100. He is some kinda dealer he tells me one pervious owner and full service history, he was supposed to deliver it this afternoon but now saying it will be Monday, I've paid just the delivery fee of £120. Is there anyway I can check the service history on line or find out the who the previous owner is, the reg is BF04HBE. Suggestions or comments please, Steve

What ever needs being done will be recorded on record, it will be one of those things that you can choose on many things if any thing.

Going on the registration, it was last taxed in Feb '17 and the MOT runs until 13th Apr 2018.
Put the registration index into this site to get the MOT history of the car
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

The dealers should have a record of the service history if it has been serviced by a main dealer or an indy who can update the service record. Unfortunately, I don't know how you'd get that service history before showing proof of ownership. You are taking a big chance buying it unseen, but you don't need being reminded;). Hope it works out OK.

... and there are some 'dealers' who are happy to take money up front - even small amounts like £120 - and then disappear.

My brother was caught this way when buying a lathe from several hundred miles away, sight unseen, but with a £350 advance for door-to-door delivery. Dealer vanished with the loot, and the same lathe has now appeared several times on the Bay under different listings.

Not saying this applies here ... but such scams happen. it's now an added factor when buying unseen.

Good Indy will do a check for you usually FOC, of course only applies if they've logged the services with MB previously

Found it on here. But although it does show the first date of registration and area, the front of the site is basically a "tickler" to get you to buy history/HPI info etc
- you'll see there's a button to "get full service history" - when you press it the "best price" selling starts.

Good luck - let us know how you get on!

Thanks for all the advice on this, I got on that site cazana got some of the information I wanted. The car seems ok, with what I found out, the picture on that site was when it was sold from a dealer nearly 2 years ago, still looks pretty much the same. The car hopefully is being delivered tomorrow evening finger's crossed I don't have any problems. Thanks again and keep you posted. Steve

That deal didn't go through in the end with the 2004 e240 the man didn't come across as being genuine I suppose a typical second hand car dealer. Now I took on board the feed back and like to know your views about the diesel option 2001 320cdi (£1000) a private sale or a 2004 320cdi (£3500) from a dealer. Steve

2001 will probably be a late 210, assuming you mean e class again, great cars but rust is their enemy. 2004 will be the later 211. again many people like them but this will be an early car with SBC brakes which if the pump 'times out' (for the brakes) and needs replacement can cost £1k or so. ive also tried the 210 and 211 back to back and found the 210 felt (and possibly was) more spacious

Is the SBC pump not repairable, is there not a repair kit for that. Steve

not that

im aware of. they can sometimes have their counter extended to extend the life of the pump, but that can be a risk, especially if you dont know the history of the pump. if the pump fails, you lose brakes on the 211 as theres no physical connection between the brake pedal and the rest of the braking system. its all done on a 'fly by wire' system. far from ideal, in my opinion, and probably the reason they scrapped the idea eventually
