M6 is a nightmare, but how can you avoid it?
Last year, leaving Cornwall early morning, it still took 12 hours to get to the Lake District.
This year Plymouth to Carlisle took 10 hours.
Is there any another route to take when the M6 is so slow?

Up the M1 and across the M62 or further up and across the A66 - as I'm based in the middle and very close to the M1 that's my M-way of choice

Or if you want to be a bit further south or are going to Liverpool or Chester turn off the M1 at Castle Donington on the A50 & go across to Stoke & on to Nantwich.Haven't used it for a while but the A50 used to be ok.

I have... it's a right PITA round stoke and then onto Nantwich, there was also quite a bit of roadworks around the JCB factory which just delayed me even more

FTFY

The JCB factory is at Rocester, which mainly gets jammed with Alton Towers traffic :p:p

A neighbour comes originally from Fazakerley. She'd like to think she's lost her accent but her kids just laugh & ask her where she's from. Impossible to say Fazakerley without a Scouse accent. :D

My Mum was from Halifax, Yorkshire and was posted to Surrey when WWII kicked off. She married and remained in Surrey for over 65 years and her accent softened but never entirely disappeared. It would revive wonderfully when phoning home ( a trunk call ). All us kids (now in our 60s) still remember my Grandmother's phone number because the rich Yorkshire accent came out when she asked the operator for the number. The operator was in Surrey of course, but my mother's head and heart had shot up the motorway at the mere prospect of phoning home. She's been dead a few years now, but we miss that voice every day.

Sounds like a plan Steve. Parking decent amounts of vehicles in Liverpool can be difficult but there’s lots of places on the outskirts , particularly on my side of the water. Port Sunlight village is well worth a visit, there is a fascinating history , loads of parking near the Lady Lever Art gallery......
And for a trip to Liverpool you have to go through the tunnels.... Cue roof down, throttle down...:) :) :)

M6 is 50mph pretty much all the way from Rugby to Thelwall with a couple of short respites. Just not worth using at the moment.

If it was "50" I wouldn't mind, it's the sitting around or 15 mph tops that is so tedious

Although the M62 has always been a bit of a mare.

Admittedly it has it's moments...

When I was working in Liverpool I took the train form Huddersfield as it was a case of "when" not "if" I'd be caught up in an accident on the 62. If you time it out of the peak commuting of the Mancs going to Leeds and the Leeds residents heading to Manchester its not too bad these days.

Is there any another route to take when the M6 is so slow?

Several.

M54 > A41

M54 > A5 > A483 much of which route is dual carriageway.

M5 to Worcester > A44 > A49 > A5 > A483

None of which may be faster, but certainly more pleasant.

A small but happy update.
My car is in the shop for repairs.I had a C220 petrol for a day then they offered me £600 to waive the hire car.
An absolute no brainer,I can always use my wife's car(& usually do for local trips) & I've always got my bus pass!

Live in Hampshire, there's a meeting in Harrogate. Take the train via London or go in the car via nightmare?

Neither, got a scheduled flight to Leeds and back, they laid on a taxi from Leeds to Harrogate and back. Less expensive and quicker than a train, less aggro than driving, no hotel costs, there and back in a working day.

Sorry to hear about your experience coxyhog but the only thing that matters is that you're okay - cars can be repaired or replaced while people can't. Glad to hear you've ended up okay and your car is in safe hands for repairs.

I must echo all the comments about that stretch of motorway - it's frankly become appalling over the last 3 - 4 years. We have family in the Southport area and used to be able to avoid the bad travel times but nowadays it seems all day, every day is bad for that stretch.
