My baby girl is 18 months. I'd like to put her safely in the back of my SL320. Is it possible to attach a toddler harness in the rear of the car? How do I gain access? Where can I attach the harness? I plan cannibalise her old child car seat as I cannot seem to find a harness suitable in the shops!

MB do not make a child seat for the SL. It is possible to remove the back seats and you do have seat belts. I would check with mothercare or the like to see if you can get a seat that's held with the belt. the anti roll bar must be up when the rear seats are occupied.

Thanks for that. There are no seats or belts in my SL so would need to attach harness somewhere?. Will try Mothercare for low child seat.

What year is your car ? Do you have the rear seats fitted.

Done some more checking, in the 95 sales cat; you could buy a rear child seat for £927 in cloth or £1300 in leather. the mountings for seat belts are there, and that is the important bit.

Thanks, but price wise something must be cheaper.

I know, the main fact is that mounting points are built into the car, so a safe job can be done. you can use any british standard approved seat.

I put up the prices from the 1995 cat; just for fun, owning one, I have mounds of info.

I'm considering screwing a child seat onto the wooden cover to one of the rear parcel stowage boxes; keeping the roll bar up in case of an accident. Hopefully this could do while our child is small.

I think you are missing the point here on safety. If god forbid you did have an accident the forces and stress are enormous. By fitting the seat to the lap strap points built into the car, everyone is safe. A simple lap strap that holds the seat cost hardly anything. Do it the right way

Good idea. I've ordered a CD Manual which should show me the strap points?
Thanks Malcolm.
