I've seen a couple of guides, e.g. on Youtube, about removing a Merc interior door panel, and they don't seem to worry about the airbag. Maybe on a sedan it's in the pillar or headliner. But in my sl I assume the side airbag is in the door. Am I right, and are there any precautions that need to be taken when removing the interior panel (i'm planning to fit new window glass)? I've removed driver airbags in the past and I take the appropriate steps there, just a bit worried about getting covered in powder and me ears blown out. ;-)

Off the top of my head I'm not sure you have them on your 129 on that year. I don't think you do. However if you do There will be an srs sign on the door card.
If there is then disconnect the battery first as a precaution. You can re connect it once the airbag unit has been re installed. But like I said check for the srs sign on the door card first!!!!!!

I don't think you have side airbags either but could be wrong.

Couple of tips before you take your door card off, make sure you got a good plastic spatula type thing to prise the plastic clips out that hold the door card in place and buy some spares from MB as you'll always get one or two that snap crack or just loose their gripiness after removing(make sure you get the right ones tho, theres a couple different ones listed for SL's of our vintage.

Oh and have fun, removing an SL door card is quite an enjoyable experiance and you'll see behind just how frickin amazingly well these cars were built when you see all the options for adjustments to the window. Which btw may be a good time to do any adjustment if needed.

sl320 has airbag insignia

There are 'SRS airbag' badges on the door cards, but come to think of it, that could just be the interior designer wanting a way of tarting-up what is basically a cap for a screw. It'd be a bit cynical though, since I don't think I'd be the only one to think it meant the car has side airbags. I don't want to prove/disprove it by getting side-swiped.

You are fine working on the car with the door cover off,, avoid turning on the ignition if doing any real banging or movement, other than that just fine
