Went out for a spin with the Indian dentist today in his SL55 AMG.He got a black one rather than silver.All I can say is what a beast! .£1500 a month is a bit out of my league.

What do you think of the black ones, all the rage in the US, when I look at them at the dealers they always look dirty.

The car looks physically smaller than I thought,maybe that's what the black paint-job does,the brake dust from the front wheels comes up to the bottoms of the side windows and I didn't know they had the flappy paddle gear-change thing.The engine sounds fab when floored,we went up the A3 from Tolworth to Putney and back and pulled in to Direct Mercedes on the way,got loads of looks!!.
I think silver looks better.

Thanks Darrell, I think so too. they are bigger outside than a Volvo V70 and the black does make them look small. Yes the AMG has the 7G gearbox. I do not have that.

Matter of interest (and obviously not sure) but i thought that the SL55 had a 5 speed box?

I know my 211 has, as the 7g wasn't up to the 500 + lb/ft of torque. Heard they're now using a modified 7 speeder on the 63.

@Darrell,

I've found out with mine that the gearshift paddles now only get used with passengers in the car ;)
It shifts that well timed on it's you don't really need them :)

The Black SL55 AMG I had the pleasure of hammering around Mallory Park had the 5 speed box. 7G not used initially because of the high torque from the 5.5ltr supercharged engine. The sound at full chat going down the straight was amazing

SL55/65's use the old 5 speed fettled with by AMG. Due, as correctly stated above, the torque for the first versions of the 7g tronic, I do believe, however, that a new torque rated 7 g tronic will be out soon which can handle the torque to the standards set by Mercedes.

The old one could actually stand it, but I belive the actual manufacturer said it was best to test it for endurance before allowing an increase in permitted torque. Or something like that. I think it may make an appearance in the 63 when that arrives!

it does indeed. depending on the model you get, it changes up to 3rd at 58mph, which reduced the SLK's 0-60 to beneath that of the SL55, by about 0.2secs. of course with a slightly bigger ratio the SLK would have been quicker, but they wouldnt not have liked that, what with it being half the price.

it only dropped by 200rpm from 6-7th too. and you needed to be above 50mph to get 7th. it did 2250rpm at 70mph and i think, about 3100rpm at 100mph.
