SLK 230 Komp 1998 61,000km
Hi Everyone,
can anyone possibly help me with this problem.
I have a 1998 SLK 230 Komp which has done 60k. About 3 months ago we started to notice a metalic high pitched wering noise coming from the underside of the car when accellerating through the gears. This noise got much worse over the next 10 miles or so and so I took it to my local independant garage. The noise could now be heard even when in neutral. They listened to it over a pit and said the noise was coming from the Bell housing.
I was advised to have the Gearbox oil and filter changed to see if this would remedie the problem. This was done and all was well for 3 months until tonight when the noise returned and drive was lost from the gearbox.
I switched the car off and left it for 10 mins and it drove for 10m or so and lost drive again. I repeated this five time with the same result.
Can anyone help me with advice?

Smart + others :)
Your filter has blocked again, either something is breaking up in your box or the plates in your torque convertor have separated and broken up. You need to check the condition of the oil and inspect the filter for type of debris. Also check the adaptation data to verify condition of clutches in box.

could it just be that the gearbox is leaking oil and the level has dropped again such that the filter is picking up air?

just a thought

as star says it sounds like something more serious but a new TC is lot cheaper than gearbox

Thank for the speedy replys. I have had it recovered to my local Merc dealer today, where they are going to carry out diagnostics and check the condition of the oil and filter to try to see what type of debris is blocking the filter.
Hopefully it will be good news if there is such a thing with an auto box problem.

Hi, My SLK has just developed the same gearbox problem you encountered a few years ago. I understand you took it to a Mercedes daler for investigation, can i enquire to the outcome? Phil
