Hello

My son's new/first car, a 2006 SLK 280.

We took the car for a spin yesterday, 70mph->90mph 6 seconds flat.

Could someone please tell me if this is what this car ought to be doing?

Intending to do a full service, sparks etc, but in the meantime, is this 70->90 at 6 secs any good?

many thanks

I suggest you do a search on Utube for a comparison with othe 280's. Unless you can find a detailed road road test.

That seems slow. not sure what my 350 does it in and it is a manual so easier to stir the box, as these engines are lazy and need high revs, but mine absolutely flies, are you using super unleaded? these engines come alive with higher octane fuel, i never use anything else in all the performance cars i have owned, new filters and oil change and plugs may help, i drove a 280 before i bought my 350 and to be fair the 280 was quick too

Did he get proper kick down from the auto box (2 gears on the 7 speed?)

If you take into account reaction time from the slow box, then it might be about right, but I would expect my heavier Clk to better that.....

Should roughly 4 seconds. Possibly in limp mode, possibly in wrong gear setting.

out of interest, where did you get this info from? because those figures are Audi TTRS territory, i think 4 seconds is over enthusiastic

well i was disapointed with the performance on my 350 when i first test drove it but after some new air filters and a couple of refills with super, the car is a different beast, and not sure whether the ecu`s are adaptive on these cars and it has been driven sedately but after an italian tune it now flies and feels lively

Unless the engine is built specifically to take account of the increased cylinder pressure that increased octane rating gives (detonation point increased = higher pressure = more hp) then adding 99RON will just deplete your wallet faster.

New air filters will definitely make a big difference as they'll improve breathability of the engine.

MB engines need to be race tuned with different piston rings for the higher octane rating to make an actual difference... everything else is really the placebo effect.

Just to come back to the question, are we agreed that in Sports mode, I should be able to do 70mph->90mph in 4 seconds?

(I did the tests in Comfort mode but had the pedal depressed)

Comfort mode will definitely affect gear change speed. Try it again in Sport.

Might be worth checking the MAF. I replaced mine on my 2005 C230 (same M.272 engine) 18 months ago and it completely transformed the performance. We had the same thing on the wife's SLK230 a few years back. It seems that they go out of spec after about 10 years. Neither vehicle was running badly and you just get used to the progressive drop in performance.

But if you can get it down to 5.9 ..... wow, you save a whole 0.1 second!

Think what you could do with that!

The SLR McLaren does it in 3.4 and thats a 6.3 with a blower on it! 5-6 seconds is about right for a stock 280 from standing start!
