So I kicked off a rather heated debate a few months back about whether the Mrs should consider a diesel SLK.

She took the plunge and opted for a 2016 SLK 250d and it is an absolutely fantastic piece of kit.

Engine noise is really of no consequence, and while lacking any sort of tailpipe growl, it drives like a proper roadster. Nicely appointed inside and able to take a modest suitcase (even with the roof down) it may well be called upon for a wee waft down to France for the Autumn break.

I'm no petrolhead but, if you're considering one, don't be put off by the diesel engine.

I'm sure its lovely, but I saw one the other day with the 'd' badge on the back, why put that on an SLK?

I've had mine for 6 months now, and still enjoying the experience.

I swapped out of a 3.0 Z4 which most people will agree is one of THE classic engines. The Diesel in the SLK is not on the same planet with regards to noise, but one thing the Merc does do is pull like the proverbial Cho-Cho.

Might even break the habit of a life-time and buy the same model again, but need to try the SLC300 petrol first. Unfortunately it looks like Diesel is a busted flush in the view of the press!

Clearly the diesel engine has torque, but the interesting question for long distance touring is what mpg will you get and the range on a tank full?

Longest journey so far (about 100 miles) returned 56mpg. According to the dash computery thing that is.

An old B-Class.
That is why they sell diesel SLKs...there are people who worry about fuel consumption and there are those who don't care and buy petrol engines ;-)

I had one, loved it, once drove the best part of the length of Wales with the roof down and wanted to go back and do it again. Very hard to be good regards speed limits. Was too low and stiff for my wife's liking - "OK when driving but not as a passenger"

Never had any other roadster, or a V8/growler; did have a CLK 320 (V6) but it was a coupé.
