Hi,

I've got a 2001 SLK230.

I have 2 sets of keys for it; the main set which I normally use daily and a spare set.

The body of the main key remote was starting to age and come apart, so I recently purchased a new remote body and changed this a week ago. The first time I went to use the main key (with the new remote body), the car would start but only run for a few secs, and then splutter and die. Repeated this a few times and behaviour was the same. Even though the car would not start, the door unlock/lock function still worked.

Moved over to the spare key which is fine i.e. it starts the car no problem.

Tried re-synchronising the main remote with the car but still no luck.
I've also checked the 2 batteries in the main remote and they showing their voltage is 3v each (expected).

I'm worried that the small circuit board (which was transferred from the old main remote body to the new remote main body) has become damaged.

Appreciate any advice before contacting a stealership.

Thanks,

bernie

The key uses the car's battery when in the ignition. If the key was OK before the new case was fitted, then something damaged.

You are welcome to post it to me to see if I can fix it.

Was the case you changed for a flip out key remote? If so did you also move the small chip from the old case as well as the circuit board? Without this chip the car will not run.

You do have a good point here, I take it its the flip out key

Hi,

Yes, it is a flip out key assembly.
This (absence of the separate chip) sounds like it is the cause of the problem.

Prior to changing the remote shell, I watched this video on how to take apart the shell.
The video shows somebody taking apart a new shell (without electronics) and reassembling it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tnx5LGL91Zs

Just watched this separate video which includes the electronics.
Presume the chip is the small rectangular block which drops out once the white plastic assembly is removed.

If so, I did not transfer this component, and the old remote shell has now been disposed of.

Ouch!

I guess I have no option but to contact the stealership?
