My 2016 CLS 350 comes with the really awful gunk and compressor. I do not like this option - what happens if you bust a side wall?! My car has different sizes tyres back and front on the same 19inch rims. The Mercedes own brand spares are prohibitively expensive. Does anyone know of alternative spare wheels. I have tried ebay but no one seems sure if "they fit"!

You call a breakdown service is the answer to your first question. You could try a breakers and see if they have a suitable space saver you could use.

I had a sidewall failure last month on the M1, whilst I had a spare with me the valve was damaged so I had to get recovered to a tyre dealer. I could have been back running about 1.5 hrs sooner if my spare had been serviceable but it wasn't too onerous not having one.
Weight, cost and lack of available space is the reasoning we're not getting spare wheels in newer cars
