Hi all,

I've got a 56 plated C180. I always find that the oil filler cap is ALWAYS impossibly tight to remove. I don't want to get any tools on it as i'll scratch it.

Have you noticed this, is there a special too required or od you just need hands like a lumberjack??

You can buy the tool from Halfords circa £5 that fits the cap, I use a universal strap one

Common problem - various solutions. There was a thread on this once - worth a "Search".

You only need leverage......make a ''tool''.......cut a slot in a piece of 2"x2"......double ended lever. Keep for next time.

OR just two pieces of timber held firmly across the cap......again a double ended lever.

Thanks all,

Sorry about the dodgy spelling in my original post - I was rushing and the wife was in the car giving me, "the look".

Television - "Universal strap one" - We are talking about the oil filler cap and not the filter aren't we?

I'll try Halfords - for the sake of a fiver it's not wirth ruining a fivers worth of 2"x2". It's absolutely locked on solid and it's a bit difficult to get any sort of purchase on it with your hands.

Thanks for the tip.

Sorry I was wrong there and only the strap type will do it, a strap bottle opener will also take if off

I use Water Pump Pliers with a cloth in the Jaws, or another suggestion. I have a gadget called a Boa Constrictor, which is a plastic handle, with a quite thick rubber strip attached. You wrap the strap around the edge, and tuck it through the handle to grip. Excellent tool, also use it on Bath taps, or anything I dont want to scratch. Bought it from QVC years ago, but they must still be around.

A diesel
sounds as though you are fully fit to return to work now Will? ;)
Ha. Feeling better today and was having the same thoughts a few minutes ago, but yesterday was very painful indeed.

Get the old cap off anyways you can. Buy a new (or second hand) one then problem solved. They can't be that expensive.

I'm pleased I read this thread, as I've just discovered the very same problem with my 2007 C180 oil filler cap (having bought an additive to try). Does that Boa tool do the job?

This used to bug me too. I can't remember if mine is always tight cold or hot. Cold I think it was. But if you try it at the opposite end, hot I think, it's absolutely fine.
