Squealing Brakes!

Hi All, I have a slight problem that I was hoping you could advise me on.

I have a 1995 E220 CE, I love the car and it runs great. The only problem is the brakes sqealing very badly, not if I brake hard but if I slow gradually and can very very loud.

I recently mentioned it to local mechanic who said it was very common for these cars. I had a spare set of pads so he soaked two of them in some resson he thought might help but since he put them on the problem's worse!

Might this decrease as the new pads wear in? Are there any specific pads I can get that will not squeal? Anything else I can try?

The squeal is only vibration so you need to either reduce it or dampen it. I've generally found a shim behind the pad with some copper ease soaks up the vibrations and quietens it down. Failing than, perhaps a new set of discs.

lessteaks,

The brakes should not squeal if:
a) Fitted properly
b) Of the correct compound/brake rotor spec
c) Used correctly.
My first port of call in solving this one would be to inspect the brakes for any damage first to the pads or discs. If all is well then remove the pads, deglaze them, clean down the calipers and coat the back of the pads with coperslip grease.
If this fails to cure the squeal, then a change of pads will probably do the job. Quality pads will inevitably come with anti-squeal shims on the rear face. A coating of coperslip will again assist.
Sometimes cracked discs can amplify the squeal to the point where it is noticeable but these are problems in their own rights and the discs should be replaced.
I know of no resin liquid on pads, which will quieten the noise and I am horrified if this was the case. I suspect that he may have applied brake cleaning fluid, which is very volatile in an effort to clean off any oil contamination but it is all a bit of a half-hearted application to resolve the problem. I would have expected him to have at least carried out the work I first suggested.
One last thought, glazed pads are usually the result of frequent light applications. The brakes need to be firmly used occasionally to keep them well conditioned.

A Light Smearing Of Copper Grease On The Backside Of The Pad Should Eliminate The Squeal

Definitely copper grease. Most motor factors supply it. Clive's answer above should provide alternative cures if this doesn't work
Don't understand "I had a spare set of pads so he soaked two of them in some resson" - do you know exactly what he soaked them in?

This thread is quite old so I'm guessing that lessteaks fixed his problem. It is nice when we get to know the outcome, but also not that common.
