Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help.

I have an SL55 AMG ( 2003 - 03 )

When I accelerate from a slow speed I sometimes hear a 1 second squeek / whistle.

Any ideas?

It comes from the supercharger belt at the front and has been raised as an issue previously on here. The guy who raised the issue cured it by spraying some graphite in. He sold his car and passed the tin onto me and I can assure you it works for about 6 months when you have to respray it which isn't much hassle.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

The problem is I have NO idea where to look.

Also, where do I get the spray?

So I guess my question is, where do I get the spray and where do I spray it?

Sorry. I am an amateur......

Thanks Malcolm,

So I spray the graphite spray onto the inside of the belt I assume?

I guess this stops it from slipping?

I can't do any damage can I?

Also, where can I get the spray?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I have never done anything like this and I don't want to break anything.

I'll try to take some photos in the morning to show you where to spray.

You don't spray the belt as that would be counter-productive - making a belt slippery - you actually spray inside the clutch. Make sure you use graphite spray, NOT graphite grease!

Stopping the Supercharger squeek/chirrup.

  1. Engine as it is normally
  2. Remove the front engine cover. This can be a bit tight but just apply steady, firm upwards pressure and it will pop up.
  3. Place a piece of thin paper or a thin feeler gauge into this gap.
  4. Spray very carefully against the paper or feeler gauge to get the graphite to run into the gap. Do not spray vigorously or it will go everywhere.
  5. This is the spray I use. I don't know where to get it from but it can't be that difficult although it's not cheap
Hope this helps.

It's so easy, even I can do it!

It's all part of being a member of this forum.

Actually, mine needed doing as it's been about 6 months since I last did it and it was starting to chirrup again. You gave me the nudge I needed to get it done, thank you.

What you'll probably find is that that's how long it lasts before it needs respraying.

Hi Helen and Malcolm,

I managed to find the spray on ebay and it arrived yesterday. It only cost around £10.

The squeak has now gone!

Many, many thanks for your very useful advice.

Hi,

I think i may have this annoying squeak too!.. What type of spray does the trick and what is it i am actually going to spray? I am UK based so any alternate products that i can get here would be useful. or is this something a dealer could or would do if i popped in?

Cheers

Nick

Hi,

I got my spray from ebay for about £10.

I searched for grapit 33.

I sprayed the supercharger clutch myself as per the photos from 100% Bitch ( see page 1 ) They are very useful photos. If I can do it anyone can as I have no idea!!

Let me know if you need any more info.

Cheers,

Toby

Just wanted to say; here we are many years after your original post, and I'm here to tell you thanks very much...I finally got a chance to try it today (used a product from home depot called Blaster Graphite Dry) and it was so easy and worked so well I'm very thankful. I'm not sure exactly how long it will last...hopefully it last for the 6 months or longer.
